Anyone watch the wonderfully off-beat comedy "Doc Martin" on PBS?

Last week I was watching it, and one of his patients was having visual and auditory hallucinations.

After first assuming it was grief and lack of sleep, Doc Martin finally diagnosed her with Lyme Disease.

He said nothing about malingering or needing to see a psychiatrist.

It was a funny episode and refreshing.

I love Doc Martin - will have to find the episode.

It was from the Season Four Series. And I believe the episode is called "The Departed".

Yeah, they showed that lyme could cause some serious neurological problems - even if the character has psychiatric symptoms, Doc Martin did make it clear it was caused by a brain infection.

I was glad the writers could make that clarification. However, as with all TV scripts, once treatment was offered, the patient (off screen) was assumed to get better and have a good life.

The kind of series this is, I think the writers handled it about as well as they could.

I still found myself wishing the good ole Doc might have said even just one sentence about it maybe not being a walk in the park, though, that it could be a bit more complicated but at least they were on the right track.

I also wish he might have said that lyme can show all kinds of different symptoms but I don't think anyone who saw the show would think that everyone with lyme would exhibit the exact symptoms as the character. Or would they?

In the brief time for this sub-plot, they got the main aspect correct: they treated the patient with dignity and did not section them as nut case. The film treatment portrayed it as a medical problem.

And the main point was made: that lyme requires urgent attention or it can get far worse.

Yep, I thought they did a good job too. And my guess is that Britain probably treats the way we do. Short term course of antibiotics.

But still, it showed that Lyme can do terrible things to people other than just sore knees.

So I appreciated that show very much.

i was surprised when i saw this. part of me went "YES!!! finally" but i was hoping there would be more said about it but considering it's considered a comedy/drama, i guess they can't get into real detail.

I don't know how long PBS has been showing Doc Martin. I discovered it last year and fell in love with it. The scenery is great too!

The new season started THIS WEEK on their West Coast flagship station here in the states. Check your PBS local sites for times.

I think my station passed it by - not sure when they will pick it up.

Thanks Keebler.

I watched Doc Martin last night, but it was a re-run. It airs again tonight, and they may show a different episode.

Looking forward to the new season whenever it starts here.
