My son's sinuses are completely clogged up due to allergies and upper respiratory problems.

He has done one z-pack (zithromax), has used steroid nasal spray for the past month as well as an two different inhalers, one steroid and one rescue.

I am aware that we are supposed to avoid steroids, but he is completely clogged and getting ready to head off to college this weekend.

He has been in remission for several years, and has tolerated the steroid nasal spray and inhaler with no problems.

I just don't know what to do next for him. The dentist x-rayed him today and mentioned that his sinuses are completely clogged.

I am probably going to call the family doctor (not lyme literate) tomorrow to see if I can get him in to see him.

Not sure what else to do. Any suggestions are appreciated.

He needs to see an ENT right away. He really does. I had plugged sinuses for 7 months and it ended in sinus surgery. My maxillary sinus on one side was completely full of junk.

I took abx for 7 months. We tried everything. I waited too long to see an ENT... about 6-8 wks.

Now, I wonder if his sinuses would show up as plugged on a CT scan? That is the important test.

You could try having him drink some mangosteen juice, an anti-inflammatory juice. When I started drinking it, my sinuses ran for two days.

It's in healthfood stores and online. I like the Mango-Xan version as it's the most tart. We're all different in how we respond to any remedy.

Serrapeptase is a systemic enzyme that reduces inflammation and thins fibrin in the bloodstream, which also thins thick mucous in the sinuses.

If the mucous is thin, the sinus will drain, and any infection will have no place to set up shop.

You can google for Serrapeptase sinus to find lots of information about this.
You can read reviews of different brands of Serrapeptase at iHerb.com and at Amazon.com.

Ditto the ENT suggestion. And also, try a few drops of thieves oil into a bowl of just-boiled hot water. Cover his head with a towel and have him inhale.

Also try Sambucol (elderberry extract) which is available at all drug stores.

Hope he feels better soon!

Sigh...you don't believe me, do you.

I hope you'll find time to read the many happy reviews.

The main reason sinus problems are so prevalent, is that people have the Lyme bacteria in their bodies.

It may not be causing alot of problems, but the body makes more fibrin in response to the infection, which thickens mucous.
If inflammation swells the sinus drainage opening closed, then bacteria and fungi can set up shop.

I have not had any sinus infections since I've been taking systemic enzymes.

Sinus infections can be yeast, which means taking abx can make them worse. I used to get a lot of sinus infections until I got a neti pot. Of course, if they're clogged, a neti won't go through, but once they're clear it might help for maintenance.

I highly recommend you consider using Olive Leaf Extract (Seagate brand). FYI - I am in no way affiliated with the company or the product, just a satisfied customer who wants to help.

http://seagateproducts.com

I have not used it for such extreme cases as with your dear son, but we use it especially for colds, flu, etc. The Seagate brand has the most active ingredient (oleuropein) in it and it is extracted in a cold-press process not using any sorts of chemicals.

I would also have your son take the capsules along with using the nasal spray, to give a "double-whammy", so to speak!

Dr. Morton Walker's book, "Olive Leaf Extract", is a great reference source. I purchased it on Amazon for very little. Check your local library - maybe they might have it.

Here is an excellent article from the Townsend Letter, "Olive Leaf Extract: Antimicrobial Therapy" written by Dr. Walker:

Lymetoo-what does it mean when sinuses show up on CT? Is it always fungus? Mine have shown up on both CT's. Non LL say "sinusitus"

Linky-a trick for congestion relief in 48-72 hours.

2 teaspoons of xylitol in 1 cup filtered lukewarm water. Shake until xylitol crystals totally dissolved.

Then neti or nasal flush this mixture. Tell him to try and hold the xylitol mixture for as long as possible before letting it drain.

I did this 4-6 times a day for 3 days and it unjammed my sinuses.

My LL recomended this for biofilms in the sinus cavity.

I agree with Carol re enzymes to thin everythig out and reduce inflammation.

Also, maintenance neti/nasal flushing with simple saline baking soda mix is good too.

Congrats to him for college. [Smile]
