Um, I'm confused as to why this writer had an intro and conclusion about Lyme, but the whole body of the article was about presidential stuff/hillary Clinton. Was the author putting the Lyme topic and conclusion paragraph as saying Lyme is everywhere, be careful, without having to put himself/herself (I don't remember the author) out on a limb and undergo scrutiny?
Am I totally missing something?
Interesting, to say the very least. But confusing.

Yes, thank you Lymetoo. To calrify, it is not meant to be a political post. It's meant to be a "what in the world is the authoor's intention??!! Maybe someone has read some articles by this authkr and can offer insight. But i appreciate you reminding me of rules I such a respectful manner, Lymetoo bc I can't remember all of them.
I don't know if her or her stuff about Lyme on the article is sarcastic, tring to get readers' attention, if I'm missing something, or is the author is trying to say Lyme is everywhere and watch out without undergoing scrutiny. Definitely an odd article!!!

- For those unfamiliar with his work, or who have not heard his voice, I can see how this can be a little confusing if starting out thinking it's about lyme.
Garrison Keillor's "voice" has been by my side weekly for decades so it's easier to "hear" what he's saying. It also helps to know that he never starts any story with what he's actually going to talk about - but there is always a connection.
What he's saying is that we can act to affect outcome.
He never intended this to be a piece about lyme.
It's an opinion essay by a well known essayist who immerses himself in the broad topic of life & the personalities and character of people.
Lyme is used only as an analogy. Analogy is a major vehicle in his style, whether it be his essays or his stories for "Prairie Home Companion" - not just as background but as a way to look at something a bit differently than before.
Analogy is the vehicle to get us to arrive at and see a place, a point, we might not otherwise visit.
He "studies" & often shares his "puzzlements" of people and the way they think and act - to his eyes as a social observer / commentator - similar to Mark Twain with his use of irony.
Both, as humorists whose work intertwines with politics and social "stuff" (I'm so tired, so forgive the "stuff") . . .
well, his particular approach to acting to affect outcome for himself regarding lyme is striking - but that's meant to be part tongue in cheek and also part using a very serious topic as comparison.
Regardless of which party / candidate one is aligned, the use of lyme here works separate from politics. It's a nice drop in to let folks know how devastating and life changing having lyme can be. He states this as fact - indisputable fact.
Job well done on that note. Exceptionally well done, actually.
So, too, about voting [and the preparation for that]. However we see our choices, our action is to get educated and to vote. This is primarily a "Get Out To Vote" essay - though for a particular candidate as this appears as an Editorial Opinion column, not a news article. -

Also, Garrison Keillor lives in Minneapolis and is very familiar with Lyme disease - may have had it himself -
and I am glad he knows about it and makes this article a bit of awareness, even though it is not the main purpose of the article.
Nice analysis, Keebler!

- Thanks, Ann. It's so very hard to read, think & write with constant vertigo so I never know if my words make sense. Glad my attempt made some sense.
In scanning over fifty comments to that essay, my eyes found just one that takes the lyme mention further
and his LITERAL legislative financial support policy points coupled with his FIGURATIVE use of "blasting" analogies for what we should just do - with his undeniable righteous anger - is of note:

- "me" - glad it helps. Thanks for bringing this to our attention. I missed it. I usually scan The Washington Post a couple times a day but the title might have just gone past me. I read many more headlines than actual articles. -
