so tested positive for gliotoxin and trichothenes. My new HE washer can no way handle a good clothes cleaning. Does any company make washers the way they used to be? I'd pay good money to have my old washer back if i could.

I did try to buy a used one, but it made my clothes smell like oil.

I did a Google search and found the following:

Top Load Washers: Not High Efficiency (HE) - Sears

(can't post the link because it includes parentheses) You will see a number of washers on this site

Then, there is this GE washer that may be what you want:

http://www.geappliances.com/ge/washer/traditional-top-load-washing-machine.htm

And, here is a Consumer Reports article telling you the best ones:

I was going to suggest Sears.

The new washers suck. I have to use the heavy load setting on all loads. Water saver, my rear.

I used to use coconut oil as my body lotion. The new washer doesn't remove the coconut oil from my clothes and all dark clothes would have white film all over them.

I had to quit using coconut oil. I would take the old style anytime. I hope you find what you need.

I am researching washers right now. My 30 year old washer is dying and I want one right like it to replace it!

pam, my bf uses jojoba oil on his hair since it's fragrance-free. this washer doesn't get much out and the parts it does clean
spreads to the other sheets and stays there.

I would also recommend Sears. They have great customer service. Staff are actually knowledgable about their products.

A few things they told us that will help the HE washer work more effectively.

First, Always add a very large pitcher of water to the bottom of the washer before adding your clothes. This tricks the washer into thinking that it is a large heavy soiled load. So it will release more water to better wash the laundry.

Second tip, use HE laundry detergent. But, resist the urge to use too much! Example, they say a large load of laundry only needs 1/4 cap of Tide HE.

Same advice for fabric softener like Downey. Use less.

They don't recommend detergent pods of any kind.

Better yet.. Don't use ANY Downy! That junk is bad for anyone, much less someone who is ill.

dogmom.. Maybe he could try safflower oil. I use it on my skin and I haven't had any trouble with it regarding clothes washing. I'm allergic to just about everything else.

manname, just fyi in the research I did it seemed front loaders were to be avoided due to mold growth in the door seals.

Heard some recent positive things about Speed Queens, more expensive but supposedly worth it.

I just purchased a Speed Queen a couple of months ago after my 14-year old Kenmore started leaking oil.

No complaints so far. It was a bit pricey, but it was worth it to get a machine that works like the old ones and actually cleans your clothes!

Just bought a Speed Queen! The salesman told me they are the most like what I had.

He said they are supposed to last 25 years. They find the ones they are replacing are in the 20 -25 year range.

It was a little more than I was hoping to pay, though he said they are going on sale on Wed and he gave it to me at the sale price.

Can't wait till it gets here tomorrow and we can get started on our huge piles of wash!! The weather is beautiful for drying laundry on the wash lines outside!

Wow. I didn't realize how pricey they got. I couldn't pay that. There's only one of me but I do wash bedding a lot. I'm thinking about a Maytag 4.2

The washer is in place and the first load of towels is washing. I like the look and feel of using it. It seems like a quality machine.

dogmom2, they had 3 different Speed Queen models in the store. One with manual controls and the other two with electronic controls. The one electronic had more bells and whistles than the other.

I got the electronic one with less bells and whistles.

Have the 4th load of towels in the washer. They are coming out nice and clean. And drier than they were in my old machine.

It has a display of how many minutes it takes for the load. That is a nice feature. Gives me a better idea how soon to check on my washer.

Well, my new washer has washed 20 loads since we got it last evening. It did a good job - I'm very happy with it.

wow, 20 loads you've been busy!

Something I learned with my he washer. Don't ignore the manufactures monthly cleaning maintenance. I thought if I used vinegar in my wash, that would be good enough. So didn't clean it for a year and a half. Now my clothes smell bad.

I have to replace it anyway, but still running cleaning cycles with the affresh to clean it in the meantime.

affresh smells strong but I use a mask/gloves to put it in and run an extra rinse cycle after I use it and it seems okay.

MannaMe, still liking your new washer? Can't wait to find a new place so I can replace mine which leaves my clothes/sheets etc smelling like ammonia.

Do you think the speed queen needs to run a few times without clothes when it's new because of the steal drum?

Have read some reviews where sheets were streaked gray when initially washed in those machines.

Yes! I really like my new washer. Its been doing a fantastic job of getting things clean.

I usually use the heavy duty cycle because it fills with rinse water and then use the medium soil instead of heavy soil.

The eco cycle just spray rinses instead of filling with water.

I didn't run it before putting a load through and had no gray streaks on anything.

One thing I wish it had more water levels instead of just small, medium and large. My old one had a sliding scale, so I could adjust it wherever I wanted it.

I've even washed potatoes, carrots and pickles in my washer! They each went into separate pillow cases and were tied shut. Didn't use soap, just rinsed in cold water twice! Nice clean produce!
Easy way to wash them after digging them out of the garden.

Well, its over a year now since I got my new washer. I am very pleased with it. Its been doing an excellent job of getting clothes clean.

After all the laundry was washed, I put little potatoes in 3 pillow cases and washed them too. Now I have a big kettle of little potatoes cooking.
