I received a voice mail from a collection agency in regards to my daughter.

I called them pretending I was her being told my daughter had an outstanding debt from almost 3 years ago.

We had insurance so I know this isn't correct since we only have a copay.

They also had our old address. I didn't receive one single bill from them.

The bill would have gone back to them if they had our old address correct?

I also looked at our calendar which shows we cancelled the appointment within 24 hours.

I refused to give them any information since I google searched it and was told never to tell a collection agency anything.

How should I proceed?

Two options 1) Contact your insurance company

2) Ignore the bill collector

These people are likely not at all who they say, even if they have some details.

This is likely a scam matter.

Do not engage.

Be sure your daughter does know exactly what you told them when you called pretending to be her - that return call you made.

And the legal /state person with whom you talk also will need to know what details you may have shared with them that they did not previously have.

If this is not a scam, the state or legal person should be able to help you figure things out if it is actually some collection agency that has been hired by an insurance company. First, you need professional help to figure out just who they are.

Call your state government's department where there is an Insurance ombudsperson, though they may have a different title. There is supposed to be such an office in every state government, to help citizens with insurance issues like this.

Still, this sounds like a scam - it's one of the main tactics they use. You are sure that all accounts were balanced. So it makes more sense it's a scam group of criminals.

They can be brutal, though, with phone threats so just don't engage until the authorities can help guide you on precisely what to do.

I checked them out, it's not a scam.

It's a Dr. my daughter saw a long time ago.

Keep in my, I didn't get any sort of bill from this provider.

If my memory serves me correctly, we cancelled the appointment within the appropriate amount of time.

The Doctor didn't try to contact me. They had our old address with the debt collector telling me I didn't update my address.

I didn't update her address because we didn't see the Doctor.
