You can get Doxy at the pet store? I thought only Amoxy?

Be careful with the doxycycline from the pet store. Check the expiration date. Doxy is safe for humans up to 2 years after the manufacturing date. After that, it stops working and it damages your kidneys.
There was a recent thread about fish doxy that expired in 2015. Since it didn't say the date of manufacturing, and since 2015 is more than 2 years from now, that expiration date can't be trusted, so those pills shouldn't be taken. From this example we saw that you can't trust the expiration dates on fish doxy, so if they don't list a mfg date then they're not safe to take.

I get a low dose Doxy Rx from my eye doctor for dry eyes. Does your sister have dry eyes and could get Doxy to do double duty?
Doxy is also used for Acne, right? Does she have acne? Or is it Rosacea?

I think I use to get it from "Revival Animal" on line. Actually, I got fishflex which is Ceftin, but I know they have doxy and amoxi also. Not sure about the manufacture dates though. But I used them for years when I had sore throat, UTI, whatever,... and my Kidneys are still fine.
It's the rest of my body that is ruined since the TBI's took over!

FISH DOXY IS NOT AN OPTION - I was the original poster on that thread and I have since found out that the expiry dates for fish run far past the safe usage window for humans.
Most meds simply lose potency after they expire - doxy actually changes form and becomes TOXIC. Unless you know the date of manufacture - DON'T take it. There is a one year window from the date of manufacture where it is safe for humans.
In comparing the fish doxy with what I was prescribed I think I mixed the 2 pills I was comparing up - they were identical. That night after a took my last dose, I had a terrible pain in my side all night. Was it 100mg of toxic fish doxy with a 2015 'for fish' expiry date? Something else? Don't know for sure - but please be warned. It is not for reasons of financial greed that the Aquatic doxy sellers put "not safe for humans" on their bottles.

I find myself in the same boat - was only given a week's worth of doxy (using ILADS criteria) and didn't know what to do.
After realizing fish doxy was not the answer, I went online and explored mail order - no script- sites. I placed an order online on July 2nd for 180 caps of generic Doxy 100 mg. It shipped from India, and arrived today (july 7th) early AM.
Both the date of manufacture (Jan 2011) and Expiry (Dec 2012) are on the blister packs.
I chose express shipping and my total was about $60
Ironically I got better explanations and cautions with it than I did from the urgent care doctor in the US.
For example - don't take it with dairy because the calcium chelates the doxy and reduces its effectiveness. Don't lie down 30 minutes after you take it to avoid irritating your throat and esophegus (sic - sorry can't spell). Take with full glass of water.
Doesn't mean you can't eat dairy - just wait a few hours. Same with any multi vits or mineral supps. My doc only told me about sensitivity to light and sunburn.
Anyway, don't want to sound like an authority here - this is all a great big experiment and I am hoping what I ordered is safe, but just thought I'd pass the info along.
If you google "Doxycyline" & "Doxycip" [generic name] & "Doxycycline hydrochloride" [one of three trade names used in industry - Hyclate is the one we usually encounter in North America] & order online - you should get it.
I found at least two sites where no script was required. The sites are administered by what appear to be american companies that ship the generic product from India [Mumbai].

Juliet - thanks a ton! That's absolutely awesome that we can order them online. I was wondering about this for a long time now, but I always thought the shipping would be too slow.
I think this is good for EVERYONE to know, because whenever we have family/friends who get Lyme we can tell them to order the pills online.
