I have had right knee effusions on and off in the last 15-20 years. It was treated as rheumatoid arthritis, using plaquenil. This seemed to control the swelling and was able to stop the medication a couple of times. 5 years ago it came back and tested positive for lyme in the joint(blood negative - Igenex). LLMD put me on plaquenil and Biaxin. Off abx for 3 years and swelling is back (90 degree flexion only). No pain, except muscle tenderness from fluid. This is my only symptom! Anyone with some advice or similar situation?

I have also experienced something similar. It all started in my knee and after a couple of years I found out that it is Lyme and now I have a bunch of things going on. Anyhow, try to control it with the meds and do your best to move it. I have tried many things and have not had a lot of luck with the knee swelling. I am in the process of trying to explore how I can open up the circulation through the knee because it is such a closed joint. If it is Lyme, you should treat it if possible because you do not want to take a chance that it could lead to other symptoms. Good luck climber
