Due to possibilities of suppression of the immune system, I am concerned with taking some of the over-the-counter stuff. I feel like I've heard some of it can cause problems similar in nature to what the steroids can in terms of helping the bugs grow better.
I had gum grafting periodontal surgery and have quite a bit of inflamation 3 days later on the gums, and at some point there is concern regarding local infection coming from the surgery. I have not been on the abx generally prescribed to help avoid infection (bad GI reaction to abx last few tries).
So the dentist is suggesting ibuprofin, but I'm concerned from the lyme angle. Any thoughts?

- I'm not addressing the main question about lyme as, short term for a few days, you just have to do what you have to do to address acute matters of the mouth.
I would not take ibuprofen for inflammation as (IMO) there are far safer things you can do for that. Such as:
MAGNESIUM is a primo anti-inflammatory
MSM, Turmeric (or Curcumin), other antioxidants?
OLIVE LEAF EXTRACT - good in many ways
Drink more water?
MILD Sea Salt gentle swish?
Seed-A-Dent (or similar GSE solution to swish)?
SEA BUCKTHORN OIL? Very soothing & healing for the mouth tissue.
If you have a naturopathic doctor or acupuncturist, they could tell you what else you might do.
There are instances where:
Ibuprofen can cause kidney stress &/or damage, even in moderate or mild doses. It constricts blood flow and that is never good in the kidneys.
Acetaminophen can stress &/or damage the liver, even in small doses. It blocks the liver's ability to manufacture and manage glutathione.
More detail about all that, and some other ways to help relieve pain:

In my non-medical opinion, it's not going to affect your immune system that much. You DO need something to help with inflammation. If your stomach can handle it, take aspirin.
I take NOW brand curcumin for inflammation, as my stomach is very sensitive.
PS .. I've never heard that about ibuprofen myself.

It's good to be cautious about what drugs you ingest, but the ibuprofen should not be a problem, as long as you don't have any active Gi bleeding or ulcers.
Ibuprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-infammatory agent, and works by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis. Having a Lyme infection poses no additional risk, to my knowledge.

Not sure about the ibuprofin.
But I would do as many natural antimicrobials as possible to keep infection away..... olive leaf extract, grapefruit seed extract, oil of oregano, Viressene, Quintessence, garlic, etc. etc.
For the site itself, maybe let coconut oil sit in your mouth a good long while, then spit out. Also, do you have ozonated olive oil? That would be good too. Also, colloidal silver.
Last year I had to have a wisdom tooth out. In hindsight, I think I should have been given an antibiotic. I didn't give it much thought and I had a hell of a time. Wish I dosed heavily on the things I mentioned above. Anyway, these are just my thoughts.
How about Boluoke (3x day) for inflammation?
Wishing you well.

Ibuprofen is what my LLMD suggested I take for pain.
I, too, prefer things like turmeric, etc., but sometimes you need to bring out the big guns.

Actually have been doing a lot of these other things like ozonated hemp oil, using Xymogen's Nrf2 Activator which has curcumin among other strong herbal antiinflamatories, OLE, sea salt water. May try the sea buckthorn oil again, although that hasn't been a winner for me in general.
The dentist is saying getting the inflamation down can help the body accept/heal with the new gum grid that was surgered in. Now it is inflamed more than average for this time (now 4 days later). Nothing to do with dealing with pain as it is not that bad. I've done aspiring and pointed out it is NSAID (AI in NSAID) but the dentist says ibuprofin is much better and works differently than aspirin.
Thanks for the comments everybody. Sounds like I can give it a try.
The GSE is a little tough for my GI tract, but maybe swishing would make sense. By the way, the surgered area is covered, so all this stuff to apply to the area sort of still makes sense, but is going to be limited in effectiveness because the important area is covered by something the dentist put on.
