Hi all,

I wrote a few weeks ago about having a sinus infection. Lyme doc wanted me to take Levaquin, which scared me, so I took Augmentin RXd by local doc. After 10 days of Augmentin still had pain in my upper right teeth. Lyme doc said to go on Levaquin after Augmentin so I started it yesterday. Took the second one this morning around 5:30 AM and now, 3 hours later, I suddenly have shooting pain in my left shin/calf sort of midway down from the knee. When it happens my leg gives out from under me. Also, occasional pain in my left knee which I have had before. Could the pain in my shin/calf be at all due to Levaquin?

I have been using magnesium topically every night for about 2 years and also started magnsium sulfate injections a week ago.

Thanks,
K

I had tendinitis after only 2 days of Levaquin and still occasionally have problems with those tendons years later. Can't they give you penicillin for your sinus infection?

A lot of dentists use it because it gets in the mouth area real good. Unless you're allergic? If you don't feel comfortable taking Levaquin, I certainly wouldn't. It's not worth it.

Hi girl,

Augmentin is penicillin and I took it for 10 days. I keep thinking this is Lyme, Babs, or some other co-infection rearing its ugly head or "just" die off. The pain in my leg scares me.

Thank you,
~k

hmm.. I don't know about your pains. My little girl had pains in her leg recently after having a bout with the flu and I made her take Magnesium baths (epsom salt) and made sure she had enough potassium and calcium, too -and that seemed to do the trick.

I know! It's not worth it. I still occasionally have problems with those tendons. It's not bad, but it's there. And I know it's from the Levaquin. powerful stuff! Why don't you get out the package insert and read it to see if you think any of that's going on - or talk with the pharmacist.

I was given levaquin in the hospital for a kidney infection a few years ago.

I ended up with tendonitis in my left heel that took a year to resolve, had to wear the boot for months.

It still hurts from time to time.

If the pain is halfway between the knee and the foot, then it is NOT tendon pain. There is only muscle there.

Tendons attach muscles to bone, so when the muscles end, the tendons begin. So, near the heel and near the knee there are tendons. If you have a very short muscle in your leg, the tendon can come up a number of inches from the heel.

You can easily see where the bulge of your leg muscle ends in your calf. Then, somewhere a little below that is where the tendon attaching that muscle to the heel is located. This is the most common tendon affected by Levaquin.

Most people will first get a tight or sore feeling in that tendon. Then, eventually, it becomes actual pain. It will hurt when you walk, as that is when the tendon is strained.

Pain in the shin is not tendon pain either.

Levaquin causes inflammation of the tendons--tendonitis.

This webpage discusses the subject. Look under "Levaquin."

I took it in an IV for 3 days in the hospital, then a course of orals, probably for a week or so, when I got home.

Well, the pain in my leg stopped that same day. I am now on day 4 and can't say I have any of the listed side effects. However, after 10 days of Augmentin and now 4 days on Levaquin, my upper teeth still hurt. I would guess it's not a bacterial sinus infection and there is something else going on. Fun with Lyme & Co!

Levaquin isn't bad for everyone. For bartonella, it's great. It can cause pain, but it's not permanent for everyone. I think a lot of people mistake muscle pain and/or herxing for the terrible youtube video symptoms.

Thanks droid1226. I do have Bartonella but it was RXd for a possible sinus infection. I do believe now that the pain in my leg was herxing. Monday I had a lot of anxiety for some reason so it just seemed really scary. I feel more calm today but I still question if the pain in my teeth is really a sinus infection. It's not like Augmentin is a wimpy antibiotic. Ten days of that should have cleared it up if it was really a bacterial sinus infection. At least I think it should have.
