A drum teacher here at our store came down with the classic early stage symptoms; joint aches, flu-ish feeling, tiredness. So... He went to the Walk-In clinic here in Barrington. (He has no PCP... yet.)
The on-duty doc sad, "Yup! That's a Lyme Rash." after spying a pretty obvious Erythema Migrans on his left calf.
So what did he prescribe him? Two... Yes, TWO weeks of doxycycline at the 100mg, twice a day ("b.i.d.") Told our teacher that'll "take care of it", &, "We got it early" &, OH, "Remember to stay out'a the sun". (No other advice).
I mean, CRIPES, the IDSA says 14 - 21 days of abx. It's mid-2013! When will this stop!? How many more people need to be under-treated & get sick Months... or Years later??
BTW, I caught on to it & straightened our teacher out. He went back & nearly had to make a scene to get 3 additional weeks of 'doxy'. Also told him of all the other Do's & Don'ts while he's on the meds. Posts: 1233 | From Dover, NH | Registered: Sep 2008

Don't forget to tell him to get tested for coinfections and also to hit all 3 forms of lyme.

Good idea, Hoops, IF he HAD a PCP. But for now he's aware of babs & bart symptoms 7 seems to be symptom free right now.
He's 2 weeks into the abx. Woulda been finishin' up with the doxy now had it not been for me grabbing him as he left work & made him sit in my A/C'ed car that eve... reading Dr. B's guidelines (For E.M. rash & symptoms- 4 weeks beyond rash & symptom resolution... with min. of 6 weeks., etc.)
Yes, Lymetoo, I've passed on word re: plain yogurt, Kefir &/or probiotic capsules.

I wish I couild say he opened their eyes, but he left the clinic with their still feeling he was over-treating. The discharge paper indicated they showed him 2 sets of guidelines (either "IDSA"- I forget the names of them) that *both* indicated 2 weeks for a visible E.M. (Lyme rash).
On the plus side, the walk-in clinic a town away, in Lee (@ the "Lee circle"), takes a Bit more aggressive approach: 3 weeks for a "high-risk bite" (imbedded deer tick that's attached- or may have been attached- for over 24 hours).
Unfortunately, pretty much the same Rx for a rash, BUT insistence to follow up with one's primary doc for further treatment "as deemed neccesary". Yeah... well...

That is exactly why I am in the boat I am in.
I only got maybe two or three weeks worth of doxy. I had the rash also. They took a blood test and it came up negative.(LabCorp) I was supposedly fine.
I am not so fine today which is a little over two years later.
