My LLMD wants me to do a trial of Mepron to go after potential Babesia. I dropped the script off at the pharmacy and soon had a call from the pharmacist saying that the drug required pre-authorization from my insurance company. I know they are not going to cover it.

So what kind of cost am I looking at? My friend who has Lyme said it cost her close to $1,000 a month. Is it really worth that money?! Is there any way to get it cheaper?

My doctor is not even sure I have Babs but since I've already been treated for Lyme and Bartonella and am not really improving, he wants to give this a shot. I want to get better, but I obviously do not relish throwing away $1,000 on the off chance it *might* help me. Help!

You can order Mepron through a good Canadian Pharmacy for $649 for a 750mg/5ml 210 ml bottle. Email a copy of the prescription and they will deliver it in about 2 weeks. Its the same Glaxo Smith Kline sold in the US for about $1200

It is costing us around $700 per month with insurance. The credit card bills are piling up!

A piece of good news for me--the pharmacist said my insurance company IS going to cover it. Only $247 for a 45-day supply for me and $197 of that is going toward my deductible. I'm SHOCKED!

The bad news is they are giving me a hard time over the coartem my doc wants me to alternate with the mepron. It's always something!

Good lyme doctors know the meds that require preauthorization and they contact the patient's insurance company and get it OKed.

I have known a number of people who went through this.

So, especially if the med is very expensive, you want to get your lyme doctor to go to bat for you with your insurance company.

I asked an insurance company recently - due to the fact I was trying to calculate a "doughnut hole" for someone- how much Mepron would be if the patient had to purchase it.

$70.00.

Yes, seventy dollars. I believe it was a Humana drug plan. I asked and verified that three times to be sure. So you may want to keep pushing and checking. I think the Wal-Mart drug plan was connected to Humana.

Here is some Humana plan info.

BTW- I am NOT promoting Humana insurance above any others. I have an unbiased distain for all insurance companies, this one I just happened to have worked with to try to help someone recently.
