I have had tinnitus (ringing in the ears) for a couple of years now, and it has gotten worse over the past few days.
Anyone know of an effective tx?
Thanks.

sorry, nothing has ever helped me but I have not tried mainstream drugs.
mine is 24/7 for years.
my effective treatment is: ignore it as best I can

Are you taking antibiotics that are known for ototoxicity, like gentamicin or other aminoglycosides? If so, you might want to talk to your prescribing doctor about both your ears and to be sure your kidneys are tolerating the meds.

If on mepron I've found that it REALLY increases the ringing in my ears. If I skip a day it decreases significantly. I also read online that cider vinegar is supposed to be a natural remedy for this (if you can stomach)
I tried and could not drink it even diluted in water.
I have also read that rubbing coconut oil behind your ears helps. I've tried and didnt have luck with it but everyone's different
Any chance they are clogged? Ive done some research on this too and I used one of those elephant ears and it got a bunch of wax out. That did seem to help

besides meds/herbs, sounds can also increase the tinnitus . it's called reactive tinnitus. Mine gets louder and higher pitched like it's actually trying to compete with other noises I hear.

I didn't think I had wax either until I actually used one of the things! I was so grossed out!
I was nervous to do this to begin with because I also have some fluid in my ears that my llmd believes is related to the babesia. I didnt want to put ANYTHING in there.
Felt much better after

Oh one other thought sorry to keep yacking but I am going to try peroxide in my ears!
It was suggested by my LLMD you should ask your doctor before trying it but a peroxide and water mixture few drops in the ears is also supposed to help

I've always used peroxide in my ears. Really helps when you get water trapped in there. It never relieved my tinnitus though. I've had tinnitus with hearing loss for the pass 43 years. I can't remember what it's like to have quite.
I hope you find relief!

Mine stopped for 6 hours afterwards - well, hey, maybe that's a clue - when I did treatment with a PEMF machine - pulsed electromagnetic frequency machine -
It's a box that emitted e'm frequency clicks. I held the white coil next to my body. I started with 10 seconds and ended eventually with an hour session.
A Lyme doctor said it may have quieted down the nerves.

Hope this does not sound pompous or obvious, that tinnitus should be seen as a symptom of fringe imbalances in the overall system. Most of our ills respond to therapies that bring back balance to the system. I think most of us understand most of these disorders require large changes in lifestyle that people look away from for one reason or another. That may not be the case as much here, since a lot of folks are in bad shape and given it all they have to make lifestyle changes. Gluten could play a role in tinnitus. Anxiety as well but can be self re-enforcing as well

I would take magnesium and B12 to protect your nerves. I have also had tinnitus for 2 years, but its been all the antibiotics that have caused it.
NAC is a powerful antioxidant which may prevent worsening of your tinnitus.
Also, avoid noise exposure. I wear earplugs to dry my hair with a hairdryer now, and for any other loud noises.
I carry a pair with me everywhere I go.
Now that I have tinnitus, it seems like every medication I take makes it worse, even non antibiotics.

I used to have ringing ears , buzzing and like sirens going off 24/7
It used to get so loud I could not hear any one speaking.
Louder than anything you can imagine. Alternate from ear to ear high to low etc.
Yes with treatment it might have gotten worse but I had nothing to loose . If there were Side effects did not care .
Eventually it slowly subsided. Then would start over again.
Well I never backed off of anything continued treatment then one day it just stopped it was a long process and now if I'm lucky I have very low or almost unnoticeable ringing .
I'm planning on it to fully go away useing supplements and herbs I have full faith in it.
In my opinion I feel people hinder there treatment and a fearful of treatments ,herx , side effects etc.
Had I given in taking a break or being afraid of the treatment or facing the unknown .I would have never gotten better.

lostlyme, did you take a lot of antibiotics for your treatment? Herbs? Just curious. It is so hard for those of us suffering from this - especially when you have permanent hearing loss and vestibular damage.
I wanted to try the BEG spray from a compounding pharmacy, but it has gentamycin in it - very toxic to the ears and many have permanent hearing loss or tinnitus from this. Xithromax caused further hearing loss for me. You can't go back when this happens, unfortunately.
Would love to learn more about the course of your illness and how long it took for you to get rid of your tinnitus and other symptoms. Thanks so much!

- The ototoxicity issues are discussed here, see the links to Bauman's book, it's essential.
And so is liver & kidney support to help protect ears. It MUST be on board.
Protection from noise is key, too. Even from hair dryers, vacuums, blenders, etc. (which are all ear killers but might not show for years).

Yay, Keebler is back! We missed you Keebler :)
I am not sure what all the causes of tinnitus are, but we discovered that emfs impact us more than we ever knew. We purchased some dirty electricity protectors and our tinnitus drastically reduced. We just plugged them in and found some peace and quiet right away.

catgirl, what type/brand of protectors did you get?
EMFs do bother me; it always flares up when I am at the computer.
Carol, that looks interesting and the reviews look pretty good too.

catgirl, how far apart do you space them in your house? Is it necessary to put them in every room?

I think it says one covers a 10 x 10 foot room, but we bought the meter and plug to test the wiring, and found that each room was different. You will need the meter to balance it all out in your house.
Our kitchen was really bad (needed 6), as were the bathrooms. The meter read differently in each room, so there is no set way of knowing without it. It also read differently each time we put a plug in, so you have to play around with it. Some rooms needed more plugs than others.
In the end, we found that their assessment of the number of protectors needed was accurate. We put them in every room, even the basement (really bad outlet there). They were worth every penny.

Ear-ringing, if not traumatic in nature (i.e: a fire cracker) is often the result of local inflammation in the area of the cochlea. Allergies are a big cause of such inflammation, though infections & lack of sleep can also cause the condition.
Eliminating anything you might be allergic to... whether, food or air-borne, can often help with tinnitus, but I found that taking extra Vitamin B (esp. B-6 & 12) ALONG WITH regular daily exercise, helped "burn out" the ringing for me.
(Note: If recovering from Lyme, follow Dr B's guidelines & only exercise non-aerobically, every OTHER day!)
Also- OTC & Rx drugs, which are deflammatory in nature, can reduce- or even eliminate- ear "ringing", if only for a few hours. My favorite was Daypro, but ya gott'a take it w/ food to avoid tummy upset.

I have just started taking ALA (alpha lipoic acid) to help my liver. It is also supposed to help reduce tinnitus, but it seems to be increasing mine! I hope this is temporary!

I've had tinnitus for over two years. The same high-pitched tone in my head. I believe it was caused by Zithromax.
This past January, I was the lucky recipient of two new tones: a buzzing noise in my right ear and a hollow, whistling sound in my left.
EMFs may not be good for the ears, but the only way I can get to sleep at night is listening to pink noise from my tablet through earbuds. Fans and noise makers don't drown it out.

I'm pretty sure that the tinnitus is due to the spirochetes playing tiny violins in our ear. It's their way of telling us they love living inside of us and they ain't goin' anywhere.

Sideways, try reducing EMFs in your house. It has made a big impact on tinnitus for us. Even hubby noticed. The peace is nice.
There is a really good book called Zapped: Why Your Cell Phone Shouldn't Be Your Alarm Clock and 1268 Ways to Outsmart the Hazards Of Electronic Pollution--Ann Louise Gittleman (lots of info).
Paulie, lol!
