Hi 2roads,
This sickness seems to be making its rounds in PA...
Our children recently took turns with a virus going around. Someone said hand, foot, and mouth was going around.
They would run a fever for one to 3 days complaining of a really bad sore throat that actually looked like strep. They ached and said that their legs hurt, too.
Lymph glands were sore and more pronounced; they didn't want to eat and complained that their tummies were hurting.
One of my children didn't seem to be weathering this as well as the other ones had, so I took him in for a strep test just to be on the safe side. It was negative, and by the next day he was thankfully starting to improve and had more of an appetite.
The nurse said that strep AND a virus was going around, so I was glad we had the test done, and strep was at least ruled out.
So, it turns out it was just a virus of some kind, whether it was the hand and mouth virus, I guess we will not know.
So maybe keep an eye on him and continue to give immune building supplements if you have already ruled out strep.
Hope he soon feels better!

Strep would have been my first thought, esp with the stomach pain...Have they repeated the test?

didn't get one , because we get these every couple months and they always come back negative, therefore they do not treat.
so, we go in to the docs office and end up catching more things....

Post nasal drip? Acid reflux? Reflux can happen when sleeping, so it could be irritating the throat.

Thanks Judie. I do think post nasal drip is an issue. He has that every night when he lies horizontal. Sometimes it contributes to it. I have to first think about that posssibilty before anything, especially with the seasons changing.

So my daughter has had episodes like this - I feel like we have communicated on this issue before?
We finally figured out that it was due to a lingering strep infection. The regular course of antibiotics was not enough for her body to clear it.
Her strep tests came back negative too. That was apparently because the strep had been partially treated, so it wasn't showing up on the test, but it hadn't gone away completely either.
It took us years to figure this out, with little help from many doctors. It also took a lot of work to find doctors willing to prescribe a longer, stronger course of abx, but thankfully we were able to, and it helped a lot.
So now whenever she gets strep, we give her a double course of antibiotics, and use a midlevel one, not just amoxicillin.
For the situation you describe now, I would consider asking for clindamycin. It's very good for strep.
