ok, I'm having a tonsillectomy tomorrow and I told the DR I didn't want the steroids. He said he did not recommend that for such a surgery but last time I had them for thyroid surgery, is what put me here! Chronic tonsillitis, I believe was the result.
He said he would leave the decision up to me. Truthfully, since it's my throat, I'm scared that NOT getting the steroids would be a bad idea and my throat could swell out of control What should I do?!

well, how do I know if I need to have them? I guess I should ask him the risks of not taking them.

I'll talk to him. I want to say no. But...I wondeer what the risk is of my throat closing uup without them. Maybe if I promise to chew on ice chips for hours after, he'll leave me alone.

Drs usually will express their opinion if it is really really necessary.
All the best to you...let us know how you are doing.

- There are OTHER ways to address inflammation. IV Magnesium would be one to explore. Turmeric, too, to ask about - or a LL ND would know of other options to ask the hospital doctors about. But it's probably too late to fully explore options - and you won't likely even see this or have time.
Let's just hope for the best. Good luck. Carrot juice afterward, I hope is on your menu. Hummus, etc. -

If you are worried about potential throat swelling up (I would be too), you could ask for a shot of Toradol or some other related drug. It is in the same class of drugs as advil, but it is more potent.

So is the doctor saying that he does recommend them? If so, I would ask him what other options are available.

No steroids! Home recovering! Thanks. For your feedback, it helped me to be strong in my belief of no steroids!

Do you get popsicles?
I had my tonsils out when I was a teenager. I kept asking for a Popsicle. My boyfriend was visiting me. I would ask for one and then fall asleep. So- he would eat it - but not tell the nurse! Finally the nurse cut me off from Popsicles ......
I never could figure out why I couldn't have anymore until he told me long after the hospital stay...
