My son has appointments with Dr. J in Washington D.C. (his assistant) and the famous Dr. H (New York/ Why Can't I Get Better) (his assistant) both in January.
I have to make a choice on which one to go with. My son is 14 and has PANDAS, as well. He stopped going to school in October. He suffers severe anxiety and social phobia. So most of his symptoms are psychiatric. He is also tired all the time.
Which doctor would you take your child to see? I would be coming from Texas.

It is impossible to get in with Dr, H's office and has been for over a year. So, if you can get in with his long-time assistant, you are truly blessed!
If it is a newly hired assistant, I would still vote for Dr. H's practice over Dr. J. You can see Dr. J any time. There is no problem getting in with that practice. But, many leave it.
If you are going to see one of the newly hired doctors in Dr. H's practice, they are unknowns. From what I understand, they operate independently and their treatment is NOT overseen by Dr. H.
So, if you are sure you are going to see an assistant of Dr. H, then go with that appointment. Dr. H will then oversee your son's treatment which is what you want.

I would go to Dr. H. We were fortunate enough to get in to see him from help from this board and were very grateful that we did. We are from Houston. We saw the PA first and I can tell you he is very knowledgeable, caring and will spend a lot of time with you. They will test for everything under the sun, and are extremely thorough. They will do phone consults every so often as well. Our son had an acute case. When we went up there the second time we saw Dr. H and again he spent an hour with us.

While my daughter tested high for strep and mycoplasma, it was the bart treatment that got her well. Rifampin and azithromycin if I remember correctly. The rifampin did it.
She had horrid anxiety, couldn't remember how to swallow and thought I was going to die. She would get so frightened and cry. It was heartbreaking. She is all well now. We saw Dr. L in Maryland. TF has info on her if you need it.

If you take a look at some of the more recent videos of Dr J presenting at ILADS, you will notice that he appears to be slowing down - just not as sharp as he probably once was.
A wonderful doctor who has helped many, many children, but who I think may not be quite on the cutting edge any more.

I took my son to see Dr. J's assistant (the one who sees kids) and I was not too impressed. She trained with the other Dr. J but she doesn't have that much experience herself. I don't think she was that thorough, nor do I think she was experienced enough to know what to do with a case that isn't straightforward.
Maybe ok for a straightforward case, or on an interim basis while waiting to get into someone better, but that's all I would recommend her for. She's very nice, and maybe in a few more years, will get there.
