Had my follow up with the doc today.

He believes I have Lyme, MCAD, and at least one co-infection.

Because of the Mast Cell Activation Disorder, he didn't want to put me on more than one antibiotic to start out. So I'm on doxycycline (100mg 2x daily) for first seven days and then doubling that amount after 7 days (200mg 2x day). I believe he wants to add Tindamax next if the doxycycline goes well.

The pharmacist asked me what I was using the antibiotic for and said I can expect upset stomach on that load.

Any advice to avoid the stomach issues besides taking the antibiotics on a full stomach after a meal? I purchased two probiotics (one liquid and one capsule form) to aid with digestion.

I'm taking something called "Intestimax" that my LLMD recommended that is very good.

I'm taking zithromax, however.

I still have some stomach irritation until I take it, then I'm usually good all day. Good luck!

Wow .. how did you find a Dr to diagnose you with MCAD? You will have a rough time on the doxy.

I am taking Doryx following a sinus surgery and I am miserable on it. It's supposed to be easier on the stomach than doxy .. but UGH.

Do be sure to take it in the MIDDLE of a full meal and do NOT lie down for at least an hour after taking it.

I am a big eater, probably like you. My stomach is like iron. Every time I changed antibiotics, even doxy, it would hurt the first three, or four days, then go away.

I just plowed my way through it. The recommended dose of probiotics has gone up. I think we are supposed to be getting two hundred billion a day. Two hours before, or after meds.

I always do two hours after and load up with my biggest meal of the day so it digests well.

I think I mentioned the brand I'm using last time, and the quantity on that other thread. I'm taking more than probiotics than I supposedly need, but that is probably why my digestive problems

are hardly anything to speak of. Finally getting some slight constipation. Also be sure if you are on an anti fungal that you are taking that yeast probiotic I sent you.

Reading about it makes me wonder if I have it too.

You talking about MCAD? I can hardly eat anything without my joints reacting. That's why he thinks I have MCAD.

I've suspected it for myself for about 18 months now. Lyme can cause it.

Be sure to stay out of the sun while on doxy. That includes while driving.

You can get the doxy burn through the windshield. So, wear light cotton gloves while driving and a hat to shadow your face.

The doxy burn is a chemical burn. It is so nasty that nasty isn't a good enough word for it. And, you won't turn red, so there is no clue it is happening until it is too late. You will feel like your hands are in a blowtorch and you won't be able to stand cold or hot water on them, or 5 seconds of sun either.

Once you get it, you will suffer for about 30 days and will likely have to stop the doxy. No pain killers will stop the pain either.

So, do all you can to avoid the sun completely. No going to the beach and sitting under an umbrella. It doesn't always work. You have enough problems. So, just stay totally out of the sun.

The medication insert will mention this, but often folks don't realize how serious this side effect is. Most lyme doctors will not prescribe doxy in the summer because of this. But, in your case, you must need it.

Wow, thanks for the advice TF. I would have probably worked in the yard tomorrow. I was at the pool today. The doc nor the pharmacist told me this.

I was on doxy all through spring and all of summer until now. I never burned. I felt like I might be burning at the pool once

so I went up into the shade. I'm half Italian and my skin is a little darker olive than most. Maybe that makes a difference?

Anyway, I spent a lot of time in the sun and didn't get burned.

If I were super white like my wife I wouldn't have chanced it. I wanted some natural D. =) Didn't want to feel like a vampire.

I'm not a total moron, although some would differ, it is just that I don't care anymore.

Doxy stings, burns, and tingles your skin when you are out in the sun. Total avoidance is best.
