I have low ferritin, SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth) and FODMAP issues.

ANY type of iron pill is wreaking havoc in my gut (please note: gut, not stomach, my stomach can handle iron just fine).

I've tried God knows how many iron products and all of them cause my SIBO to go crazy. Iron feeds my gut bacteria, and I end up having diarrhea.

My LLMD (famous, yet unhelpful) gave me tons of stuff which made things actually worse!!

I was the one who figured out I had SIBO, and I was the one who eventually figured out that I needed to eat low FODMAP (which IS helping my gut, but not my ferritin levels).

My LLMD now tells me "to just use food" to raise my ferritin levels. That doesn't work either. Aside from liver paté, I can't tolerate anything with high iron content.

On my LLMD's protocol, I was losing weight rapidly as I had diarrhea eight times a day!

I only weigh 103 lbs, so I don't have a lot of weight to lose ...

Gastroenterologists in my area don't even know that SIBO exists, have never heard of the FODMAP diet and are just generally clueless.

Anything with too much carbs, fiber and starch as well as anything high-iron and high-FODMAP is causing the food to ferment in my gut and I get foul-smelling gas and diarrhea.

It is not a candida issue, as candida meds (which previously helped when I had a different type of diarrhea), don't do a darn thing. Furthermore, my gut doesn't get better on the Candida diet, but does react positively to the SIBO and low-FODMAP diet.

I have been off antibiotics and on herbals only since the winter of 2013.

Anyone out there with SIBO/FODMAP issues who can help re: raising ferritin levels? Please?

Thanks!

I appreciate all your replies. If it takes me a while to respond, it is either because I'm too sick or because I am unable to log in. From European servers, Lymenet is very frequently inaccessible for days at a time ...

I don't have SIBO, but I have very low good bacteria in my gut. I also had a gut infection. My doctor has me working on my gut and hopes that when I get the gut healed and can digest food properly that my ferritin levels will come up.

So, I'd work on the gut! And try to eat higher iron foods.
