Squirrel scratches?

OK...I know this is an odd one...BUT...

This afternoon, I was enjoying a lovely outdoor lunch with my friends...
When all of a sudden, a squirrel fell from the two story roof on to my head!

He had a soft landing...but, quickly scrambled off my shoulder, onto my arm and hand, and then ran away.

The little dare-devil left a few scratches on my shoulder, arm, and hand that drew blood. We quickly washed everything up and applied some Neosporin (after I composed myself from the shock and laughter).

I would think that I have enough antibiotics in me to kill any new possible infection that a squirrel may be able to give someone...but, not knowing much about squirrel scratches...I'm not really sure?

Of course, these odd things always happen on the weekends, and there isn't a doc available to check with !

Just thought I would ask...if any of you possibly know anything about these furry little critters and if they carry anything I should be specifically cautious over.

Thanks in advance for any info!

Melanie

I would suggest calling a vet tomorrow....

It is unlikely that you need to worry, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

Hi Melanie

With all the stuff you're infusing I wouldn't worry about infection.

Just be thankful it was a squirrel and not a rhinoceros.

Question

Did it drop its nuts on you too?

Ok ok really, I looked it up about the scratches

Fear #1 is rabies. You rabied thing you!

Fear #2 ( get this) is plaque! But good thing for you it wasnt a canadian squirrel that nabbed ya, so you are plague free.

The only thing I would worry about it rabies. Did its nuts look healthy? May not have had it

In CT, we have walk-ins. They're places open all day and, sometimes, all night. No appt needed. I call them, sometimes, for free medical advice. Is there anything like that near you?

The question that comes to mind is, Could this have been considered an attack? If the squirrel was normally, I would not worry. If the squirrel was acting strangely, I would at least call the ER. A cop shot a rabid raccoon in my yard a few years ago.

Hi Melanie,

My husband had a similar situation occur about 2 months ago. Only it wasn't a squirrel, it was our outdoor cat.

Our little one had left the screen on the slider open and she just waltzed on in. When we discovered her, my husband just walked up to her and picked her up to take her back outside. Well, she totally and utterly PANICKED!!!

She howled and bit him 5 times and scratched him like no one's business. Her claws are like razors from being outside. It literally looked like he had been in an knife fight.

I immediately panicked because we are behind on her shots and she eats everything she can get her mitts on......mice, birds, moles, chipmunks, etc. Not to mention the ticks that like to frequent her.

Our ND was closed the day it happened, so I called the vet and they said that if she was rabid that you would know. She suggested Neosporin, but we chose Tea Tree Oil. It has super penetrating properties and will kill any bacteria on the surface as well as below the skin. It will also help to boost the immune system.

I also got him on Wellness Formula (by Source Naturals). It has every immune boosting supplement (Garlic, Astagalus Root, Goldenseal Root, Echinacea, Vitamins C, etc. etc.) He took 3 every three hours as well as extra Vitamin C and Garlic also every 3 hours. He also kept putting the tea tree oil on the bites and razor scratches every 3 hours.

The next day I went down to see the ND and asked what else we needed to do. He said that we had all of our bases covered and to keep up this regimen for atleast a week.

He wasn't on abx and used the natural abx that I mentioned. That was about 2 months ago and he is just fine.

You had abx in your system before the "attack", so you were already ahead of the game. I would suggest adding some immune boosters to the mix.

I can't stop thinking about that old cartoon song "What out for that Squirrel!"

Thanks everyone!

I am having MAJOR ISP problems...yet again!

The only problem with the squirrel scratches, is that this happened on one of my 'off' days...meaning...no abx that day...or until Monday again.

I know that zith stays in the system for a good week...but that is it for abx in my system right now, I believe.

The swelling around the scratches has decreased, and they seem to be healing up quickly...

But, I will call my homehealth, just in case...and my vet.

Thanks you guys!

PS...no emails util this ISP problem is solved...so to reach me, please use [email protected] ...

M

HA!

Just got back online (temporary only) after computer problems.

Was sifting through about 200 emails and saw yours...

I couldn't resist...

I went out back where several local hunters... who know EVERYTHING there is to know about wildlife... were working on the new barn roof.

I said..

"A friend of mine just wrote to me and said a squirrel fell on her head.

When the squirrel tried to jump up and run away it scratched her.

What should she do?"

For about 30 seconds there was dead silence...

You could have heard a pin drop.

Once it sunk in .. well.. they darn near fell off the roof laughing. Is that ROTRL? (Rolling off the roof laughing?)

Here are some of the replies... the ones I can share on this board anyhow...

1. "You didn't have to tell us it was a FRIEND of yours.. we know it was YOU."

2. "Did she catch the squirrel?"

My reply- NO

"Darn, there goes supper."

3. "What was she doing when the squirrel fell on her head?"

My reply- She was eating lunch.

"Well maybe she should keep her doors shut next time so animals won't come inside. They will do that when they smell food."

4. "You mean she didn't notice there was a squirrel in her house until it fell on her head?"

5. "What was she eating for lunch?"

My reply- I dunno

"She may want to change her diet. If she doesn't.. someday it might kill her."

6. "Does this friend have Lyme disease too?"

7. "Most folks wait till winter to wear fur hats... and they often pick the ones that are already skinned out. It is less expensive to feed 'em that a way."

8. "I'd say she was looking for nuts in all the wrong places."

9. "Is she ok?"

My reply- I dunno... I think so.

"Well then... chalk it up as another missed KODAK moment."

10. "Is she pretty?"

My reply- Very

"Go figure... them pretty ones always fall for the wrong types."

My reply- What?

"The squirrel I mean.. not the girl!"

My reply... Should have known you were asking about the squirrel... MEN!

Now....

I am off to the store to see if there are any Hallmark cards for this special event in a persons life.

PS-

In my 'squirrel falling on the head expert' opinion...

You will be fine. Keep the Neosporin coming.. and be thankful it wasn't a ground hog.

And NO.. I didn't laugh at all!!!

giggle giggle....

I swear...(and I don't do that often)...

This has been a very strange week!

First I lost my bracelet that I've had for 21 years...

Then, the squirrel fell on my head...

Then my period started (then, the herxing started)...

Then, I tried to go to church, and couldn't find it (I think they moved it)...

Then, I was washing my car (I don't do that very often either), and got bit, YET AGAIN, by a cactus...
(couldn't walk for the rest of the day)...

Then, my computer completely crashed (spent ALL morning making friends with the Dell tech guy in the Philippines)...

Then, this afternoon, I tried to refill some Rxs, my doc's name was misspelled on the bottle, they had to call another doc to get the job done, and I lost $71.00 in the confusion...
(actually, I had just left it on the counter, and thank goodness, someone turned it in, so I could pay for my meds!)

I think it has something to do with the full moon...
I am going back to bed where I belong

Hey snooker doodles..

Looks like you ARE having a rough one.

PLEASE..

Go back to bed and try again later.

There must be some "normal" still out there....

Maybe while you are sleeping it will find you!

And please be careful what you say about the moon.

You think a squirrel falling on your head hurts! HA!

Or maybe.. just maybe... this is a Colorado version of the wicked witch?

Instead of a house falling on your head.. it was a squirrel!

And you are the NICE witch...
