Hi,

I have had this cold/sore throat for over a month

now. First I got a really bad sore throat. I had

the white patches in my throat. This lasted for

two weeks. Then I got a bad cold. Terrible

running nose, sneezing etc. That started to get

better but I still have a running nose. Now my

sore throat is comming back. Its not the normal

Lyme sore throat that I get. That typically is on

the left side and it never gets white inside. It

only lasts a couple of days. This is lasting

forever. My kids are sick too with the cold but

they don't seem to have a sore throat.

Anyone else have a virus that won't go away? Do

you think that being on antibiotics long term can

weaken your immune system at all?

I don't know I am just so tired of being so sick.

Any ideas?

Lyme is known for knocking our immune systems out of whack. Do your kids have Lyme? If not that's probably the reason for the difference in symptoms.

Just my opinion, not a medical professional.

From our experience you need a different abx to get your throat infection. Both my son and I had to switch when new bugs came along. Some abx are better for different types of bacteria and some bacteria become resisitant to an abx used long term.

My son had a bacterial throat infection with white patches in his throat several months ago. He is post lyme treatment. His PCP said that if an abx has been used in the past three months then another one should be use for best results.

I had a cut on my foot that got infected and had to use another abx for 10 days. Then I went back to tetra.

We didn't seem to get any colds( viral) while we had lyme, but with lyme flares and herxing one can never tell for sure.

I hope you are feeling better soon.

I am on Zithromax and I know that they do use that

for sore throats. So does that mean you become

resistant to certain antibiotics? I am going to

urgent care tonite. I have huge white patches on

both sides of my throat and my glands are huge.

It looks like strep to me. I am concerened

though.

If I am on antibiotics won't the strep test come

back negative even if It is strep?

My daughter had a positive throat culture for strep while on Ketek and Septra (I think--it was a year ago). Dr. J (CT) switched her from Ketek to Amoxicillin for 4 weeks to treat the strep and then she returned to Ketek.

It was a surprise to me that she could test positive for strep while on powerful abx and that she would need a different abx to treat the strep.

I had a virus on the right side of my head, ear and throat for over a month after starting mino. I thought the same thing as you, that my immune system was suddenly weaker. My LLMD say's that when you kill the bugs, viruses are released and according to my tests I have a lot of viruses.

I'm on Valtrex now for the viruses. My LLMD wanted me to go on olive leaf extract but it conflicts with another protocol that I'm on so I declined. That's when he gave me a prescription for valtrex.

I was on a week of one abx for ear infections the beginning of November. Than an injection and a another abx two weeks later.

Than a week after that another abx for sinus infections and bronchitis. My throat felt like I had strep. (I had my tonsils removed 3 yrs ago, so no white spots...)

And I was sneezing and runny nose and eyes.

Mean time, my bf was on 10 days of abx for sinus infections and another 10 days for whooping or bronchitis. He is STILL sick and going back on Monday b/c of it.

AND my sister had patches of white on her throat and now fever blisters or something in her mouth and a VERY high fever.

She did one abx and now is on another after two trips to dr and ER.

AND,AND... the guy behind me at work has pneumonia.

It seems everyone I work with or know is getting sick and it is taking "at least" a month to go away and abx aren't doing too much for it.

Thanks for your replies. I just got back from

urgent care. No strep, no mono. Just a virus I

guess. It is really bad though. My daughter has

Pnemonia right now so I missed work today to stay

home with her. She can go to grandma's tomorrow

but I am so sick I know I should stay home. I

just started this job and already I Have missed

two days. Tomorrow would be three. My boss is

really cool and she is understanding but I feel

like I should push myself to go to work tomorow. I

would hate to loose this job. The pay is really

good. The main problem I have is I am a customer

serivce representative taking about 70 calls a

day. That is alot of talking and it hurts my

throat very badly. So should I stay home with my

little girl again? She probably should not go out

in the weather. I think we just hit negative 9

for the high tonite. ... It is so cold. I keep

thinking why do people live here? I swear we are

having January weather in December. If it's gonna

be this cold all winter I think I might just move

to Missouri. At least I would be closer to my

doctor. Is it possible that the strep

test came back negative but it is really positive?

I just really feels like strep to me....

Merrie,
You can ease the throat discomfort by gargling with normal saline solution.
This is saline that is the same concentration of salt that is in the body.

In a cup, mix 8 ounces of water and one half teaspoon of salt.
Leave this by the sink, and gargle once or twice whenever you go by.

You don't want to make it saltier than this, because that will leach moisture from the throat, which is not soothing.

Another idea would be to use elderberry extract, to boost your immune system against the virus.

Sambucol Black Elderberry Immune System Syrup
http://www.iherb.com/store/ProductDetails.aspx?c=Herbs&pid=NWY-15333

This is available at the drugstore. Also, there are lozenges, capsules, and other brands.

Whenever I have used it with a cold, I got better much more quickly.
I keep a stash of it on hand, in case I get hit with influenza.

Hope you feel better soon.
Carol

If you think it's a virus you could use olive leaf extract. It is also antibacterial and antifungal. I wonder if the white spots are fungal? Also, shegoi is another product that is very good for viruses.

Hope you feel better very soon.

Something like this has been going on around here, too.

People get it, think they are over it, and then get sick again. And it does seem to last as least a month or more for just about everybody. It often moves into the chest, then back into the sinuses, then back to the chest - very strange bug.

Make sure you have a decent intake of Vitamin C, taken at least 3 times a day so it kind of stays in your system.

We often use that Zicam stuff - you can get it about anywhere - and it is a homeopathic zinc preparation, and zinc is very helpful to the immune system. We've used the swabs in the past - you don't swallow anything so I don't think it would interfere with meds or anything.

I had it in October, and still not sure I've gotten rid of it, so this seems to be "normal" for this bug.

that elderberry. I need something. Thanks again
