Tonight was my first night doing it myself, and when I put in the saline after the med IV, it made a sound!

A swooshing sound at the site of my IV interence into my arm.

am i going to die?!?!?!?!?!?!?

I can not get ahold of my home nurse, if any of you all out there know what I am talking about and can tell me if you know if I should go to the hospital or that I am going to be fine... I would greatly apriciate the info!!

hope everyone is having a great week!

I doubt it is any problem. Maybe the line was kinked a little and made the sound occur?

If you don't see/feel anything bad (blood, tear, etc.) it's probably OK. I'd still call the nurse to check but relax unless you see something really wrong.

Problems with the line are usually pretty obvious.

Before you flushed your line, did you make sure all the air was out of the saline tube?

Just a thought.

I have had that sound before when doing an IV drip, the nurse got a air bubble in the line and it made a noise going in, atleast I didn't die [Razz] If it was an air bubble and your still alive right now then it did not hurt you, the have to be pretty big to cause problems

My IV nurse once told me you have to inject a huge amount of air in order to cause a problem. We're talking dozens of cc's

I think it is much harder to do something 'dangerous' than you would think. That doesn't mean you shouldn't be careful and follow proper protocol. It's always hard at first, but you'll get more comfortable with it! I hope you're feeling okay now.

Hey Skyler

My IV nurse told me that it had to be more like 40 cc to do you in. I get sounds when I get little bubbles in my line, too. I was glad that I had asked how much air is ok. when I tried to get a tiny bubble out of my rocephin syringe I squirted a good 5 cc across the table (a waste of precious medicine).

Now I only de-air the saline and heparin.

I often give injections being a vet tech. It sounds like an air bubble.

It would take a HUGE amount of air to really do anything dangerous. Just make sure to get the airout next time. You should be fine... Good Luck

Thanks guys!!!
Yeah, I know there was not an air bubble in the saline, but it dod sound like an air bubble.

And even this morning, it made a little noise when I put in the saline, and again, I checked and got rid of air in the suringe of saline...

But, I am still alive and feeling well...
I think i am going to call my nurse now.
Thank for being here for me! I was so afraid I was going to die, even though I know it takes a great deal of air to stop your heart, it still scares me to death.

Thank you guys!!!!! [Big Grin]
