My sister's primary care doc is suggesting Dr. H in NY as a Lyme specialist. Does anyone have knowledge of him and/or success getting rid of Lyme using his approach?

Here are the notes I've collected on Dr. H from different patients.

Notes by Me: I personally met Dr. H at a Springfield Massachusetts Lyme Conference. He's a competent, intelligent and compassionate gentleman, with a vast array of experience - nearly 20 years in the field of treating Lyme Disease, and has seen over 11,000 patients. He's experienced with co-infections indepth, as well as alternative therapies, and understands the complexity of not only infection, but stress, nutrition, as well as other body systems. His managers name is Ann, she talks the calls when you leave a voice message. When you call the office, leave a message with your name, number that you can be reached. If you do not receive a call back within a few days, call again and press zero during the recording, it will get you directly to the office so you can speak to someone. He does see International patients from around the world.

Another Patient Report: I feel that I owe Dr. H and his NP my life. till I found them I was being bounced around and getting more and more ill. They actually think about me and what is going on with me at the time. I don't mind waiting if I get the time and consideration that I need. The reason that some calls are returned at night is because these people work very long hrs. to care for many patients who are truly in need. LJK Insurance: Blue Cross / Blue Shield:

Another Patient Report: "As a very educated person about lyme disease and tick-borne diseases I must say that Dr. H so far has given me hope and shows kindness and encouragement even though I'm a very seriously ill late stage Lyme disease case with many other tick-borne diseases. He says that he'll not give up on me which literally gives me a reason to go on. All four of us in my family have Lyme disease and we've been through pure hell. I'm betting my life on this man to help me improve despite the complexity of my case. I love him. Helen I Insurance: Medicare

Another Patient Report: Dr. H is one of the best doctors I have seen. After being very ill Dr. H gave my his life back. Finally a diagnosis of Lyme disease was diagnosed after seeing 8 other doctors over 2 years. A previous person commented about not taking insurance. You can submit the claims to your insurance company and if your policy allows you will be reimbursed. This is not this offices fault they do not take insurance. It is the insurance companies. The entire office staff is helpful and professional. The PA/NP that work with Dr. H. are wonderful. Dr. H. leaves no stone unturned. He knows his patients and cares. As far as the phone calls. If it is an emergency you get right through and talk to someone right away on the phone. They take care of the problem immediately. I think the phone system of leaving a message works great. They always get back to you. This is a very busy and well run office. Dr. H and his staff gave my son his life back. He is now has his health back thanks to this caring doctor.

Another Patient Report: He doesn't accept most insurances so it is very expensive to go there. It is about 700 just to see the nurse practitioner, not including the blood work and medication prices. The wait time once you get to the office is long, they are almost never on schedule. One good thing is that they take their time and look into every aspect of your medical history to make a diagnosis. They give you all the medication you need. They are ok with giving pain meds when needed, but when you call to get refills on something you have to leave a message but they don't get back to you until like 8 at night. Overall he is an Okay doctor.

Another Patient Report: "He has taken me from 15%, spending my days in bed to 95% in one year of treatment. He says that everyone does not respond as quickly as I did, but if he weren't so aggressive, I would not have gotten better so quickly. I have been infected 35 years. I have to fly to see him myself, but not as far as you. He is very aggressive and knows the herbs/supps/etc. to complement abx treatment. He is not afraid to try various combinations to see what works."

Another Patient Report: I'm also seeing Dr H. I like that they do thorough testing for viruses and co-infections, as well as do a complete physical on your first visit. I felt very well "gone-over". And he is very aggressive. I'm only just starting into my sixth week of treatment and already seeing improvement. His staff listens. They write down everything. They ask a lot of questions, even on follow-up visits. My only complaint would be the time it takes to turn around questions if you have to call in about something. Faxing seems to work much better."

Another Patient Report: I just started with Dr. H. Very impressed. Time will tell if my success rate is good, but he knows ALL the different protocols it seems, and he's very good with abx and herbs such as the cowden, zhang, etc. He spent 5 hrs with me and said it will take a year but that I'll be much better which is great because I'm very sick."

Let me add my story to that. I had Lyme & co-infections for over 16 years, lots of specialists, hundreds of tests. I ended up in the CFS/FM box, all but bedridden, living with my daughter. I finally figured out they all were wrong, insisted on having tests sent to Igenex. Even before the results came back, I'd already asked for docs here on LymeNet, and out of four or five I could get to from VT, chose Dr. H. I have never regretted it.

I am one of the lucky ones, given as sick as I was for as long as I was. In less than one year, I was able to begin working part-time. PT helped me regaining my strength, and a year after that, I was able to go hiking, travel, and bought a little house of my own, which I am gradually refurbishing. I have had two relapses, each requiring a shorter treatment, and each time I got better than I had been before relapse.

I stopped going to Dr H for a while, thinking my local pcp could manage. I was wrong. With all the evidence in front of him, he missed the fact that I'd picked up a new infection, ignoring what I was telling him. I am now back with Dr H, and back on track. Dr. H pays attention to what each patient is experiencing, and works with them to adapt treatment to their needs and preferences.

Every patient responds differently. Not everyone is going to completely recover, and none of us can say for sure that we are "cured" or "rid of Lyme". We can only say that we are well, or we have regained functioning. Some never relapse, some do but get better with retreatment, and some reach a plateau (as far as I can tell, there are usually other health issues in those cases). But nearly all of us do get better, and get our lives back.

For the record, I am on Medicare, and have never had problems with coverage. My son-in-law also has Lyme, and was reimbursed for most of his expenses and all his meds by his employer's insurance.

Dayle Ann (my story is also in the "Success Stories")

For one thing, this should be in Seeking a Doctor.

Secondly, for the protection of this excellent doctor, I would suggest that this be handled back channel.

You don't want him to be the next target.

Great to hear. I have an appointment to see him next month. I hope he is worth the long journey. I am looking forward to it. I think I'll lay off the meds for that week so I can enjoy the sights a bit.

Wish me luck! [Wink]

Good reminder, lymetoo.

It doesn't seem to matter how many doctors go down, people still post information on this forum that has been used against the doctors (and sometimes the patients). This a public forum and we know it is read by the opposition.

The person who started this thread is new, and presumably does not understand. But others are not new and keep doing this.

Ask the question on the forum and get answers by private message is the safest way. PLEASE. Otherwise you endanger yourself and all of us too.
