Prayers are being answered.

Marie has been flown to California today by private aircraft in order to begin treatment there. Many, many people have stepped up to the plate to assist. Dr. M in Canada even volunteered to accompany Marie and tend to her during the flight.

Here is a 2 1/2 minute video of a Canadian news piece on Marie's "Lyme Flight" to California.

And another video news piece, 2 minutes, from 5/25/08.

For a more complete update on the McQuhae's plans for Marie's treatment please see the "SAVE MARIE CAMPAIGN" thread on the Live Discussion area of CanLyme.com.

Since so many here have been interested in Marie's story, I pasted a copy of the update post from the Save Marie Campaign thread here to Lymenet a couple of days ago. However, someone complained about the fact that doctors' names were mentioned.

Since I was not the author of that post (it was written by the McQuhae family spokesman), I was not comfortable redacting any information that was provided therein, so I decided to delete that entire post.

For the moment, further updates on Marie can be found at CanLyme.

yes, trish, yay! is right!

Marie's father, Jay, sent out the cry for help almost 4 weeks ago and he asked all of us to spread the video and his message. He really felt his daughter was dying.

I know many people here in the US even offered to open their homes to them for as long as needed. And, as I said, there was a tremendous amount of work that transpired to get this all accomplished. Work done by people with very large hearts and much grace of character.

Continued prayers are for Marie in that her healing can begin and will be complete. More prayers to Marie's Mother, Susan, who has recently been diagnosed with Lyme/Babesia and is naturally having great difficulty in coping with Marie's situation.

And I continue to send out my prayers to all the "Marie's" who are out there. We Lymies know there are too many in similar situations not only in Canada, but here in the USA, and in truth, all over the world.

Blessings,
Fuzzy

I hope CanLyme is following this story. It would be good to keep up the discussion in Canada about how people are having to leave to get any care.

Here's a news article to be aware of:

Father Flies Daughter South

I wish Marie and family all the best and do hope the doctor she is seeing can help her gain her life back.

The paper that wrote that article should change their name to the Victorian Times.

Father flies daughter south for treatment

Cindy E. Harnett, Times Colonist

Published: Tuesday, May 27, 2008

In what he sees as a desperate fight to save his 23-year-old daughter's life, Jay McQuhae hired a Learjet for $14,000 and flew her from Victoria to California yesterday to consult with a Lyme disease expert.

Jay McQuhae says the B.C. health care system failed to properly diagnose and treat his daughter Marie, causing the once active college student to deteriorate into a bedridden state.

So grave is her health, commercial airlines won't allow her to fly, he said.

[/B] But if Marie McQuhae had Lyme disease, she'd be getting treatment for it, says the B.C. Ministry of Health.

After 16 days in Cowichan District Hospital, doctors discharged the Duncan-area woman -- unable to find signs of Lyme disease. [/b]

"I understand that in the case of the particular patient that's at the focus of this discussion, that she has had numerous tests with the B.C. Centre for Disease Control and that the B.C. CDC is convinced that Lyme disease is not at issue here," said B.C. Health Minister George Abbott.

Ideally, Lyme disease is first diagnosed by a doctor.

If a patient has a tick bite, bull's-eye looking rash and flu-like symptoms, doctors should immediately prescribe a course of antibiotics, said B.C. Health Officer Dr. Perry Kendall.

Diagnosed early, the disease is easily treated.

Left undiagnosed, it can spread and affect the joints, heart and nervous system, producing chronic pain.

A blood test can support a clinical diagnosis but does not always produce positive results in the first 30 days.

The B.C. CDC recommends two blood tests -- the standard test can be confirmed with a highly specific Western blot test.

They are the international standard for both the U.S. and Canada, says the B.C. Health Ministry.

B.C.'s health officer said some labs in the U.S. use a lower benchmark for indicators of Lyme disease which can produce false positive results.

After an initial test for Lyme disease in B.C. was negative, Marie McQuhae was tested by a California lab.

The test was positive and confirmed in a clinical diagnosis by Dr. Ernie Murakami, professor emeritus at the University of B.C.

Abbott said provincial and national experts agree B.C.'s "very rigorous testing" is "appropriate."

But there are people with symptoms of fatigue, debilitation, pain and lack of memory -- called chronic fatigue syndrome, chronic Lyme disease, chronic fibromyalgia, or environmental hypersensitivity -- who suffer with little relief, said Kendall.

"I don't know what causes all of these things, but I fully understand why people want to find a diagnosis," Kendall said. It remains "a little bit of a medical black hole."

Lyme disease is caused by the bite of a bacteria-infected tick. About five to seven cases of Lyme disease are diagnosed in B.C. each year from up to 600 reported tick bites, according to the B.C. CDC.
