They ran out of time. Set your TIVO! It's going to be on Monday.

At first I thought they mentioned a Dr Bishop who would be there.......then it sounded like "Fisher" when they said it at the close of the show. So I'm not sure.

Anybody heard of either doctor? Probably a duck.

I'm sure it won't be much... but who knows.

Kelly did mention she does tick checks on her kids. They live in the Hamptons.

I'm sure the name of the doctor had an "S."

Hi!

Sounds like Dr Laura Fisher to me. I recorded it today and was able to replay it.

I don't know who she is, but they referred to her as an expert!

I'll be sure to check it out on Monday!

I don't watch the show personaly, but I love a good mystery so I put my research skills to work - here is the scoop:

"Dr. Laura Fisher, an infectious disease and Lyme specialist at New York Presbyterian Hospital"

"Internal Medicine/Primary Care
Dr. Laura Fisher, MD
In addition to her specialty in preventive medicine, Dr. Laura Fisher is also an expert in Lyme Disease - if you ever get a nasty tick bite, she's the one to call."

Contact Info: 1385 York Ave., New York, NY 10021. 212-717-5920
Affiliations: New York-Presbyterian Hospital Weill Cornell Medical Center"

Anyone know her stance on things?

Dr. Laura Fisher graduated high school with my next door neighbor---when my daughter became really ill (with Lyme disease) my neighbor called up her old friend Dr. Fisher and explained the case. Dr. Fisher explained that she doesn't treat Long-Term Chronic Lyme disease cases, which is what category my daughter fell into.

However---She did call me, offerered advice, I threw around some names of two prominent LLMDs in the NY area I was considering, and she said they were both "Good doctors"---She seemed very knowledgeable, and I got the impression that she really did want to help my daughter, but that politics and hospital regulations were what was holding her back....

I hope the show is a good one!!

Well, I went to Laura before I knew I had Lyme, because I had been bitten by a deer tick (yet again) on Fire Island. I brought her the tick.

She offered to put me on 3 weeks of doxy or something, just as a precaution... but not knowing anything about Lyme at the time, I thought that was nuts, and declined.

Then she offered to 'test' me for Lyme, so I agreed to that. She ran the Elisa, and called me in a few days to tell me I was "negative" for Lyme disease.

Because of that "negative" it took me another 2 and a half years or so before I would believe this doctor I was seeing, who kept trying to tell me that he thought all my neurological symptoms were from Lyme disease. I kept telling him: "but Doc, I've been tested and it's negative!" Oi

I don't know what she'll say, but I'm sure she'll avoid the late and chronic controversy, and talk about 2 tiered testing, and 3 weeks of doxy, same old same old...

Just had to write all that up. Feels therapeutic to tell the story. I don't blame her, she was just doing what they are trained to do...

Since the show is on Mon, if anyone wants to email

Regis and Kelley to "remind" them that at the very least their viewers expect

a balanced viewpoint of the issue(e.g. one that includes the reality of chronic Lyme, frequent need for long term treatment, that it is an epidemic etc)

and if they they don't present such a viewpoint with their "expert" they will have alot of angry viewers on their hands!

here is the show email:

Good idea, Larkspur.

I'd also add that, although they are an entertainment program, when they present medical information they have the responsibility to strive for excellence in journalistic standards.

That goes beyond just settling for one or two mainstream experts.

It is essential to include research and experiences from a wide circle.

I just sent a long note - the system seemed to take it.

I sent links to: LDA; ILADS; Savely's article (with a few excerpts) and the link to CT. Atty. Gen's 5/1 press release.

I suggested they read Singleton's new book: The Lyme Disease Solution.

I asked them to:

* put jokes aside and have ILADS researchers alongside any other doctors they had planned.

* be sure to discuss other TBD (tick-borne disease).

* consider this segment as a piece of serious journalism that could saves lives.

-

I could not suggest all the good books or links so there's still plenty for others to recommend to their research staff.

Here is the Regis and Kelly "bug bites" link...I have to say I am impressed only by the fact that they included on their list w/ LD all the co-infections and symptoms. (list at link below).

Expect it to be messed up..every interview is about LD..an interview w/Burrascano or some other ILADS MD is needed to get the facts straight.

Yes Adamm - Kelly told a story once how Mark didn't feel well and wondered if he had been bitten by a tick and had LD - Kelly and the audience roared with laughter when she said, "How can you have Lyme, you don't even recall a tick bite!" (or some illiterate remark like that)

Kelly and Burrascano live in the Hamptons (doesn't he? last I heard he did) why is HE never interviewed, I don't get it??? They are probably neighbors.

Excellent job to all of you who were proactive about contacting the show. Bravo and pat yourselves on the back -- that makes me proud!

Also, I will not watch the show because I cannot stand Kelly, but if for any reason the show puts us sufferers in a negative light or discounts what we deal with on a daily basis, can someone please PM me as I would like to know so that I can make sure their mailbox is flooded within a few days.

It was AWFUL!! Dr. Fisher gave some good protection methods but really played down what happens when you have long term complications from no treatment.

Kelly was her usual obnoxious self and made this very serious disease a butt of her crass humor.

I was disgusted after it was over....especially since I wrote in FOUR TIMES with my story and complaints to the station before this aired.

Obviously, they didn't care about hearing about the other side.

I felt like Kelly and her husband just made fun of it all.

Welcome to the world of lyme is what my hubby said. [Mad]

Does Mark have Lyme? It really appears so. He hasn't felt well in awhile and he kept saying he had all the symptoms the doctor mentioned.

Also - Kelly she has been bitten she said. She may not be laughing forever. Good luck to her.

Nothing was mentioned about the testing being unreliable and useless - Kelly talked over the doctor a lot.

The most educational part for the general population was when they showed the nymphs.

The dumbest remark was to put a flea collar on your dog and "hope for the best". DO NOT use a flea collar on your dog. Use Frontline, Advantage - the flea/tick shampoos, dips etc are very dangerous.

DEER TICKS - I am so sick of hearing this - are NOT the only carriers! This makes people believe if they don't live near deer they are safe. Mice are the real problem and most of us has had a mouse in our garage or yard.

Incomplete, not enough information as usual.

Here is their website - you may be able to find the video segment, not sure: http://bventertainment.go.com/tv/buenavista/regisandkelly/index.html

I agree. I was very disappointed with the lack and quality of information given, and all of the joking that Kelly was doing.........but that's what she does for a living.

However, she was pretty much discrediting everything the doctor was saying by joking about how Mark is a "hypochondriac", and that every symptom the doctor mentioned Mark would "believe" he had. She really made Lyme look like it wasn't a big deal and that Mark was just a wimp.

MAYBE he DOES have all of the symptoms! I thought he looked kind of scrawny, and also acted like he already KNEW he had Lyme.........or suspected it, been tested, or something. Did you catch the comment he made about the "ticks in Australia were so big they're called tocks?" (Something to that nature.)

I don't know what I'm talking about. I don't know Mark or Kelly, but they certainly won't be laughing IF and WHEN they have to LIVE with Lyme & co.

The show will then be called "LYME with ??? & Kelly!"

Sorry they weren't able to get more useful info into that segment...........but I did like that they actually showed 2 ticks.

Take care,
terri3boys

Yes, the most informative part was showing the size of ticks and that they can be tiny.

The doctor continued the "tick must be attached for 24 - 36 hours" line - I wish someone had told the tick that bit me about that, I think its clock was running fast.

Other than that, Kelly interrupted the doctor to make jokes, and ask if she should put Mark (her husband?) to sleep because he has all the symptoms.

It wasn't anything out of the ordinary. Was really pretty trivializing.

Caution with pepper spray -

The show is just now airing in my time zone.

I only caught the beginning - and since I can't watch much TV - will try to tune in towards the end, hoping all the flash and noise settles down.

One thing to caution people about is that Kelly's husband, Mark, apparently today's co-star said that there is a pepper spray that can be put on plants to deter deer.

Pepper spray is a very bad idea if there are any bears in the area.

Some bears are repelled by it, but the either the brown or the red (?) bear LOVES it. Even a tiny trace on a can in a tent will attract some types of bears - not a good thing at all.

I don't know if other creatures would also be attracted, but be very careful about pepper spray - consider all the animals that are around.

From a Google Search of: "Brown Bears" "Pepper Spray" - many links found. Here are just two:

www.absc.usgs.gov/research/ brownbears/pepperspray/pepperspray.htm

Brown Bear Projects at the Alaska Science Center

Excerpt:

26: 92-94) demonstrating that some Alaskan brown bears (Ursus arctos horribilis) were attracted to bear pepper spray residues. I decided to conduct this ...

. . .

For this research I sprayed red pepper spray directly onto the ground then sat back and observed bears' reactions to it.

Many bears were clearly attracted to spray residues, some vigorously head rubbing, back rolling, pawing and eating the soils tainted with spray.

I also observed some bears responding to these sites for up to a 5 days after spray application.

So not only were they attracted to it but for some time after it had been dispensed.

So I published a short note hoping to warn others of the potential dangers associated with misuse of the product.

- full article at link above.

Pepper Spray Update

Red pepper spray, commonly used by people in bear country to ward off aggressive bear attacks, may actually attract brown bears if used improperly, ...

Now,back to Lyme Education.

For the few minutes Lyme was given, let's be thankful.
Of course this segment was not a give all, solve all for us.Yes, we would like a complete thesis on prime time.Maybe Oprah will give us more, yeah right!!!

At least it helped to EDUCATE and there are so many that still DO NOT know a single thing about those tiny things called....deer ticks and what's that disease you had back a few years??? OH yea,LYMES??? I means LYME!!!

The VISUALS were great...the HUGE tick pictures behind Kelly made me look and listen.

The RASH picture was great... I have NEVER seen a picture of a rash during a TV presentation.

The DEER TICKS in the glass container were great.

MICE were also brought into the mix.First time on TV the MICE have been found GUILTY.

Instead of hearing the Wait and See mantra, we got get the ABX. Get TREATMENT fast. Not 10 days...now it is getting longer.

Even the IV abx treatment was mentioned.

They stressed consulting your vet, if you have pets. Brushing and checking them before they come inside.

They stressed TICK CHECKS and how to cover yourself when you must get out.

I even had people call me and say....hey that disease you HAD is on REGIS now. I corrected them and said, that Lyme I HAVE!!!!!! So listen up.

Let's be thankful that segment will help to EDUCATE the public. When it comes to LYME,TICKS...there is so much educating to be done.Prevention!!!!Basic prevention.

I'm sure those UGLY HUGE TICKS front and center woke a few folks up. Maybe next time they hike,it will be Honey...get the bug spray on,cover up and I will be ready to give you a tick check when we come back!!!!

Poor Mark and Kelly,if Mark does have Lyme. After having gone thru this nightmare...lighten up folks.Who wants to see someone suffer w/ this crap???
