I have always been sicker than my husband with Lyme and company.

One more joy of womanhood.

i think maybe on average it's true that women are sicker with LD, but there are certainly patients of both sexes who don't fit that generalization.

(also, there seem to be more women infected with chronic lyme and co in the first place, and more women with chronic illnesses in general. just an observation, not scientific fact.)

Maybe that's to help counteract the immune lull in women during estrus?

Women are also gifted with generally higher thresholds for pain, so maybe they don't actually suffer more?

Men generally whine and carry on more when they're sick. [Razz] [Wink]

I believe that there may be exceptions, just as there may be hormonal exceptions.

Perhaps men "SUFFER" because of the pain threshold difference but women actually have more going on to complain about?

Hey maybe that's why men think women are just being dramatic!!!!! Given the same circumstances, they would experience a lesser response and therefore can not relate to what a woman truly experiences.

Women probably have a stronger immune response because they are charged with incubating & caring for our offspring.

Oh my, I should have stayed out of THIS thread!!!! [bonk] LOL

Good find, thanks Marnie!

Women suffer more than men?

Overall, when you take other diseases and health problems into account, I am not so sure about that.

Absurd.

Bb has a "PKC inhibitor"

"Estrogen activates protein kinase C in neurons: role in neuroprotection"

http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/journal/118870881/abstract

"Autoimmune diseases affect approximately 8% of the population, 78% of whom are women. The reasons for the high prevalence in women are unknown, but circumstantial evidence links autoimmune diseases

with preceding infections."

http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/Eid/vol10no11/04-0367.htm

Men are generally bigger than women (bone size, muscle mass) and thus ***have bigger stores of Mg*** to begin with (and higher daily requirements).

That would be an advantage, since we can pull from storage those nutrients which we need.

Mg INactivates HMG CoA reductase and shuts down the cholesterol pathway (which is ONE of the pathways Bb takes). Mg (and Ca) are needed to make antibodies. Mg is needed to make enzymes...all of them (we are discovering new ones every day). Etc.

http://lpi.oregonstate.edu/infocenter/minerals/magnesium/

"Immunosuppression by Progesterone in Pregnancy"
(a book).

Immunosupression is double-edged. Yes, reducing inflammation is very important, but inflammation is happening for a REASON (is part of the healing process), but it is supposed to shut off and isn't.

Because our own antibodies are damaged (fab = fragment) for us to deal with Bb's OspB. At the outset of lyme, Mg levels dive and continue to spiral down.

Suppress the immune system/support it?

We can do both. Mg IS an anti-inflammatory and anti-histamine. AND is needed (along with Ca) to make HEALTHY antibodies.

I think this is a 2 step thing.

IF you have an eye infection/ear infection today, it is very possible you will be given a steroid (reduce inflammation) AND and antibiotic.

I think those who are using the EM spectrum to destroy Bb ALSO need to restore Mg levels after the treatment. It appears MgCl maybe ideal.
