Dr. B's guidelines say 400 mg a day for it to be effective. The usual dose is 200 mg a day. My doc told me 200 mg a day. I am taking 300 mg a day. and may increase to 400 mg soon.

Thank you all so much for the quick replies!! I really appreciate it.
I was confused because of what Dr. B says (400mgs for IV).
I'm not sure how PO doses compare to IV, but I think Doxy is usually very effective orally, which would make me think its absorption rate is pretty high...
In which case there shouldn't be much difference when it comes to dosing PO vs. IV.
I am tiny, though, so maybe I'll be able to get by on less than 400mgs. Just don't want to waste any time at this point...would rather wipe out as many bugs as possible!

I infused 400 mg at one time, and it was a long infusion.
Do you have a port-cath or a PICC line? From what I understand, IV Doxy can be caustic to the veins and it is better to infuse through a port.

I am doing 150 mg 2 X a day 12 hours apart. I have a port. I may increase to 200 2 X a day.

I have a PICC. This is day 5 of the Doxy and I feel HORRIBLE!!! Hoping it's a herx.
The last time I tried Doxy I didn't herx even though I'd been on it for over a month. But then again, it was oral, I wasn't taking as much, and probably wasn't absorbing it anyway b/c of GI issues (hence the PICC).
I had read that Doxy is caustic but so far haven't had any pain...I'm assuming I'd have pain if there was a problem? Hope I'm not being naive about it...
Isn't the PICC a type of central line?

I am one of "those" patients. Seriously wouldn't be alive today if I hadn't advocated for myself.
I've actually read that oral Doxy has a pretty high absorption rate in most people...so there shouldn't need to be a dosing difference between oral vs. IV like some other meds.
(although I have atrophic gastritis and malabsorption, so for me IV is likely more effective regardless of the dose...)
My doc is willing to go up to 400mgs, just wants to try this first. You're right, since I'm herxing, maybe this is enough for now. I'm also a tiny shrimp, so normal adult doses of anything don't usually apply to me!
The plan is to start with Doxy, add IV Zithro, and then a cyst buster down the road...assuming my insurance can be convinced it's all necessary, that is!!
Thanks again for your input.
