Hi. Well, it looks like I'm going to be doing a course of IV zithromax. It appears as though my insurance will likely pay for 30 days, no more.
Trying to plan ahead, does anyone here have experience with inexpensive sources or methods? I did find one thread where a member discussed mixing their own, but there wasn't much detail on how, what, where, etc....
WE used a local home health company last year that delivered zith weekly. Insurance paid for the 4 weeks but think it ran about 650 / wk for supplies and weekly nurse visit.

- Be sure liver support is in place before and at all times during. This may also help protect your ears.
Have you taken oral zith before? If not, you should give that a go to see how you do, in general. Zith can affects hearing and other ear functions.
It's not a guarantee but liver support - and kidney support - is your best shot at any kind of protection the ears when using meds that have ototoxic potential.
Your LLMD is doing this, right? Not just any other doctor?
And - you have to plan for what happens if you do have any ear issues with this as the next dose then would likely be best to forget and move to a different med.
Get you basic liver and kidney function tests first.
Also - be aware that you MUST employ solid hearing protection at all time and up to a year after some abx. Even when around hairdryers, blenders, food processors, coffee machines that look like robots (I forget what they are called, maybe espresso?) . . . vacuums, etc. EAR PLUGS &/or protective muffs are vital.
Also, to avoid ear damage, experts advise no in-the-ear "pods" and it's really best to even avoid headphones (but, in traffic those are helpful to avoid noise, just keep volume VERY, VERY low and don't use unless you have to.
Avoid aspirin as that is ototoxic and also avoid acetaminophen as that can be ototoxic as well. Ibuprofen is hard on kidneys and that increase chance of ear damage when combined with ototoxic Rx.
More about how to protect ears here.
Specifically for LYME patients - lots of details about ears and what can help:

i started to have brief ringing in the ears a month or so ago. it may have coincided with rifampin. my llmd said it could be a herx reaction. why is this an issue? also i have developed headaches that are brief (3 seconds) that happen several times an hour and last all day. ibuprofen helps this but its bad for organs? what should i take that WORKS for these headaches. my job requires me to be around load machines but i wear hearing protection. i could stop job but i would no longer be able to provide for myself of my medical treatment.
