Just saw a quick promo for the 11:00 news on channel 5.

They are doing something on Lyme disease. They have done stories in the past and I'm glad to see them continuing.

They did a (very) short thing on ticks and what to do to prevent tick bites and how to remove ticks during the 5:00 news this afternoon. It was pretty much the very last story (aired just before 6:00) and had some mis-information - namely that it takes at least 24 hours to transmit the bacteria. But at least they're continuing to have things about ticks and the seriousness of tick borne diseases.

I was told that it takes 24-48 hours when I brought my daughter to the pediatrician, so that is one of those statements that make me clench my teeth.

I believed them and a week later she was really sick.

I'll watch it and send an email, I did that last time and I'm hoping that if they keep getting emails they'll keep doing stories.

Sooner or later they may get the correct information out there.

Last time I also emailed the other stations and told them what channel 5 (or whatever station aired something about Lyme) and asked them to do more stories as well.

I caught most of the story tonight, but I wasn't watching channel 5 the whole time because I wasn't sure when it would come on. What I did see looked good, though. Interviewed a man with chronic Lyme who is on IV antibiotics. He talked about how difficult it was to get diagnosed, how he looks like a chronic complainer to those who don't know what he's dealing with. I tried to look on the website for The Boston Channel (channel 5 news) for an article of the transcript of this story but couldn't find it.

Anyone else see the story? Anyone find the article?

I sent an email to the station and pointed out some of the "inaccuracies" and here is the response. I plan to follow up with an email and ask them to at least point out where the controversy exist so people can make their own decisions.

I will also ask them to talk to Lyme doctors who are on the front line treating patients along with the researchers they are speaking with.

Everyone, please email your story to them so they will continue covering Lyme.

Here is the response:

Thanks for the info, Deb.

As you know...there's MUCH debate in the medical community about
issues--such as how long a tick needs to be attached to transmit disease
etc.
Everytime we do a segment, we hear from people who are passionate about
their own experience and researchers who have varying messages--all saying
their info is absolutely 100 percent correct.

But we certainly will keep at this topic. It couldn't be more important.

Thanks, again, for writing.

Here is the link to send your comment to the station (I copied my message and sent it to the anchors, news management, reporters and Dr. Tim Johnson:
http://www.thebostonchannel.com/station/index.html

arg82,
I did see the segment and there were some inaccuracies such as the 24 hours issue, but they did hit some good points such as ticks are around year round, not everyone gets a rash and that you can get co-infections.
