Well it finally happened my old job cancelled my insurance. Cobra is out of the question and my disability hearing is still over a year away. Trying hard to keep the faith and seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.

For what it's worth. I exhausted cobra then went to the state for medicaid. (you can do this if you don't or aren't under any insurance policy from a spouse) and have a limited income.

There are various programs through your Department of Health and Human Services, unfortunately you have to go in and sit and call and ask and ask and fill out paperwork until you get the help.

I also have my county where I live that helps me as well with a 'minimal' prescription $ amount per year for scripts. I think it's only about $200.00 but when you don't have insurance and a couple scripts sitting at the pharmacy - it works/helps.

But then all the helpful programs stopped from the state when my disability came through. I lost medicaid and have been completely uninsured for almost 12 months. Once you receive your disability (at least here) I had to wait 1 year before health benefits kick in (April 2007 Medicare becomes effective) - so watch for this as well...

So the last 12 months, i've had to sometimes pick n choose; i've worked directly with the pharmaceuticals...go to their websites and search 'patient financial assistance programs'. I was able to get from pfizer and romark three months of free medication (this would continue but medicare will kick in so you could very well get up to 6 months - 12 months depending); i know wyeth and many other pharmacueticals work with you as well if you are uninsured...check them all to see about the patient financial programs.

These are things I learned the hard way...hope this is helpful.. Just know there are programs out there but you will really need to do your own research...

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any specific questions and email me at [email protected]

Good luck
Diane

bubbear, so sorry to read this.

i'm going to send you my 45 pages newbie links/advise, ssdi, NEEDY MEDS INFO FROM MINOUTCAT...OUTSTANDING RESOURCES!!, etc.

print it all off and then skim it for what you need help with NOW!

i believe melanie reber is in there for specific things along that way ... so look for her name too as i continue to add daily to what's in there so i can't be specific where anything is found ok!

medicare becomes effective 2 yrs. AFTER BEGINNING DATE OF APPROVAL! it's not one year.

but with us being in the waiting period for years before ALJ hearing, you may become eligible that way as i was; it was effective immediately and hospital even went back 6 monnths but i didn't have any expenses then!

do you have a lawyer working for you on SSDI? if yes, contact him and see if he can get a ON THE RECORD where ALJ reads it prior and see if they can get it approved.

ALSO, CONTACT YOUR FEDERAL SENATORS/REPS OFFICES CLOSEST TO WHERE YOU LIVE. get them both involved; DDS then has to send monthly reports to the federal legislators! Iowa's Sen. Tom Harkin's Des Moines office kept me informed monthly by email or a phone call.

iowa's house rep tom latham's office, ames, NEVER kept me informed the entire time she had my paperwork. i called her later; yes, she received them monthly. i gave her heck for NOT following thru and advising me of this. i'll remember that when it comes time for his RE-ELECTION!

they can't pull any special privileges but they are treated by PRIORITY!!

work BOTH parties: repulicans and democrats!

good luck; i'll send my newbie links before i forget! [Big Grin]
