Good evening all,

Our long time LymeNet friend Gary (GEDEN) has been diagnosed with Esophageal Carcinoma.

He will begin Radiation Therapy in the next few days...and then a port will be placed for Chemotherapy. I'm certain that this is all very difficult on top of dealing with Lyme as well.

I am hoping that you will join me in sending your prayers, uplifting thoughts and well wishes his way. Gary is a brave and kind soul, and has been a good friend to many, including myself.

Thank you so much in advance,
Melanie

Thinking of you Gary, and sending all my most heartfelt prayers for the best of outcomes. May God continue to grant you courage and strength to endure this battle...and love to embrace and sustain you along the way.

Gary,

I do pray all goes well and smoothly. I hope this is the start of your health improving for you and turning the corner with your health.

I know it has been an exhausting and frustrating long time.

gary, my friend, i wondered what happened to you as you were one of the first MALE posters that started PMing me.

i enjoyed your wacky humor, and saw the warmth of your heart reach out to many others during their times of need.

now my friend, gary, we are reading out with our thoughts, prayers, support, and best wishes that they can stop your cancer, and you have QUALITY OF LIFE left!

another friend has been diagnosed with something similiar but it has NOT progressed to have the cancer in the esophagus yet! her treatments have not begun yet.

so i have you both in my prayers that god will give each of you a miracle and carry you when the times get the worst for each of you.

gary, i've missed you on the board, and please come back WHEN you are up to it to share updates and get needed support/encouragement from us! [group hug] [kiss] [group hug]

Gary, this is not good news on top of lyme.
my be seeking. My dad had esophageal cancer and i pray that you
can recover from this horrific form of cancer.

if i can help you i any way please pm me.
i may have alot of the answers you might
be seeking.

Mi Sheberakh: May the One Who Blessed...

One of the central Jewish prayers for those who are ill or recovering from illness or accidents is the Mi Sheberakh, whose name is taken from its first two Hebrew words. With a wholistic view of humankind, it prays for physical cure as well as spiritual healing, asking for blessing, compassion, restoration, and strength, within the community of others facing illness as well as all human beings.

Traditionally, the Mi Sheberakh is said in synagogue when the Torah is read. If the patient herself/himself cannot be at services, a close relative or friend might be called up to the Torah for an honor, and the one leading services will offer this prayer, filling in the name of the one who is ill and her/his parents.

Increasingly, the Mi Sheberakh has moved into other settings and other junctures. Chaplains, doctors, nurses, and social workers are now joining patients and those close to them in saying the Mi Sheberakh at various junctures -- before and after surgery, during treatments, upon admission or discharge, on the anniversary of diagnosis, and more. We present it to you here, in English translation and in transliteration from the Hebrew, as a resource for you as you confront the challenges of illness.
(Please note: The transliterated text below presents the prayer with correct pronouns for male and female patients. The word before the slash is for males, the one after for females.)

Mi Sheberakh: May the One Who Blessed...

May the One who blessed our ancestors --
Patriarchs Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob,
Matriarchs Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel, and Leah.
bless and heal the one who is ill:
Gary.

May the Holy Blessed One
overflow with compassion upon him,
to restore him,
to heal him,
to strengthen him,
to enliven him.

The One will send him, speedily,
a complete healing --
healing of the soul and healing of the body --
along with all the ill,
among the people of Israel and all humankind,
soon,
speedily,
without delay,
and let us all say: Amen!

I would encourage Gary to start a caringbridge site. We started one for my son when he was diagnosed with lyme and it has been so helpful with informing everyone. It is very easy to start. www.caringbridge.org. Our thoughts and prayers are with him.

Dear Gary,

You've crossed my thoughts often since we last wrote and I've wondered how you and your pups were doing. words cannot express how sorry I am to hear of your latest diagnosis [Frown] I'm so glad you have Junior and Jake to help you through this difficult time!

You're one of the kindest souls I've "met" and I'm so inspired by your constant strength and courage. I KNOW you'll get through this just fine! Hang in there and stay positive. I wish I had more comforting words for you, but hopefully this pic will make you smile:

Excuse me...

Did I just see you flirting with another woman?

I do believe I did, sir. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm...

You MIGHT want to knock that off... cause I KNOW you know better. I mean HEY.. what will all the other girls think?

You heart breaker, you!

[Big Grin]

I also send my best to you and, like others, I will be anxious to hear how you are getting along. I guess you'll have to go to the duck motel now and again... so do be careful.

I'm not so much worried about you handling the ducks... of course you've seen your share of them. I am worried for the nurses.. you slick one you!

NO pinching any bee-hinds.. ya hear?

[Big Grin]

I've made a new post for you in the medical section. It might of interest your doctors? I just want to be sure you see it and if it might help.. that would be great.

Let us know how you are doing... and NO excuses.

OK?

Thinking about you.. and prayers headed your way.

[Big Grin]

I just wanted to thank each of you for your lovely words of encouragement for our friend. I know they mean so much to him!

I actually did write to him with that cancer-doxy info a few days ago, so I hope that he will consider that protocol after the Radiation and Chemo is finished. (Thanks TC for providing the scientific studies to back it up.)

Gary now has a feeding tube and was supposed to get a port yesterday. Hopefully, he will come back to give us all updates, but if not, I will try to keep you informed when I am able.

Once again, I so appreciate your concern and support for our friend.

Much love,
M

go to www.caringbridge.org

it is extremely easy....everything is done for you, basically you fill in the blanks, no different then registering to post on a board. someone else can even set it up for him. I highly encourage it, it has been such a great thing for us to keep everyone updated on my son, Dustin who is only 11 and diganosed with lyme 2 years ago. He isn't in school, being tutored at home, so all of his classmate, teachers and friends can keep in touch with him and sign the guestbook. I can't say enough good things about it. You can check his site out just to take a look.

I didn't know that was happening to all you as well...I had so many aquaintances, so many friends, always meeting people. Still have close friends, but it's different.

I'll stop here and though Gary and I have not yet met, I'm wishing him many friends to see him through, and I'm sure that though we're all struggling here, we _are_ here, just like we were for our old social lives - so here is our newer, more modified one. From what I have seen so far, a solid bunch to have the priviledge of joining with. Too bad it wasn't a ski club! [Wink]

With best wishes to us all, and a special wish for Gary; may you have much ease, success, and many many blessings,

robin, thanks for posting the site info on HOW TO CREATE A SITE FOR GARY!

plus showing your son's site too!! i visited it briefly; very nice!

is there anyone who has some EXTRA time and computer skills to get a site going for Gary to help him thru this critical crisis of his esophagus cancer?

i wish i did, but i'm buried myself in fighitng bcbs, getting all my medical dications, going to dr. appts for more than lyme/hip problems, and helping husband whose essential tremors have turned into PARKINSON'S LIKE SYMPTOMS. we see a dr. about his condiion in 1.5 weeks.

thanks for your consideration!

gary wrote me; NO RADIATION TODAY, butthey gotthings lined up and mon. he has chemo then radiation in afternoon.

gary, i forgot to write back, but our local public library LOANS CDS/CASSETTES, etc. and that might be something to look into since it's FREE ENTETAINMENT! [Wink] [group hug] [kiss]

Gary,
I hope your treatments will go well. I know that radiation can cause burns, and chemotherapy can cause gut problems.

Is surgery planned?

From what you've said, you won't be able to afford supplements that would help your condition.

It's not Christmas time, but maybe someone would be able to play "Green Santa" for you.

I'm so sorry that you have to go through all this extra crap...you'd think that severe pain and the Lyme problems would be enough, hah.

Wishing you the best,
Carol

gail, gary would be happy to accept your kind offer to set the site up!

he told me in a private message that he'd really like this but understood i didn't have the extra time to do it, and besides i do NOT know how!

got an email from gary with a forward; "not feeling well; hard to type" gary .....

i know he appreciates ALL of our thoughts, prayers, kind words, offers to do this and that, and JUST REMEMBERING GARY during his times of need NOW!

gail, thanks again for offering to do this. i don't know how often he'll come here or feel up to a PM to someone, so jumped in here so you could give this more thought and start the process.

gary, we miss you here, and know you'd rather be here than going thru this hell to help you! may God hold you in the palm of his hand and create a miracle so you can have quality of life left.

Gary,

I was surprised to see you checked in but happy.

Chemotherapy is a bummer and you will need the weekends off. If you have kids or grandkids let them use your head as a billboard or a canvas. You'll get a kick out of it and so will they.

I have always been a big fan of Norman Cousins. He was a genius and like me believes in the healing power of laughter.

Please do some research on this exceptional man. His attitude is something I try to incorporate into my daily living. Laughter is the best medicine. Cliche but true.

He did research on the biochemistry of human emotions, which he long-believed were the key to human beings' success in fighting illness. He took vitamin C and used laughter to heal himself. The Marx Brothers were his favorite choice for laughter.

Cousins received the Albert Schweitzer Prize in 1990. He died of heart failure on November 30, 1990 in Los Angeles, California, having survived years longer than his doctors predicted: 10 years after his first heart attack, 16 years after his collagen illness, and 26 years after his doctors first diagnosed his heart disease. He was 85.

hi gary,

sorry, i'm overdue on my "daily" notes to you! please forgive me ok!

i got my $3800 out of pocket expenses APPEAL mailed off on monday to bcbs in des moines, and emailed a copy of it with cover letter to the iowa insurance commissioner's, marget regulation bureau's ATTORNEY, who wrote me awhile back, and was involved. asked him to take further action since bcbs didn't live up to their written booklet showing what to expect on my program 3+.

got my additional comments written on my hip surgery for my lyme story and got that off to wisc.'s author, pj langhoff, who has gotten 100 emails of patient's stories ... enough she said for TWO BOOKS OF PATIENTS STORIES! she's almost done editing to get them to the publisher!

worked in a classmate's mom's visitationn and funeral into my agenda.

spent all day yesterday in bed recuping from having overdone things!

gary, this is your 2nd week that will be over tomorrow! whew!! i hope it's going as well as can be for you.

thought about you wanting more cds to listen to while getting your chemo. did you check with your library if they check them out like our local library does for 3 weeks ... UNLIMITED!

take care my friend gary! miss you on the board, and your HUMOR [lol] [Big Grin] [group hug] [kiss] [group hug]

i apoligize for not posting for some time...i was hospitalized for 5 day's after the first round of chemo..after they tok the chemo pump off of me after 5 dayz, i thuoght this was a peice of cake...

got blindsided. the chemo had just started doing it's"dirty work". was hell.my body was not prepared for this..the hospital got me back,to some sence of normal..

i continue with the radation. have 21 more treatment's. it's not that bad. got alittle suntan on my chest where they are zapping the tumor in my throat.only there for about 20minute's..and yes Mz Cup, i do glow in the dark. come on over. i will turn off the light's , so you can see..lol..

i start the second course of chemo,a week from tomorrow..gonna dread that. but praying for the overall outcome.

i talked o a surgeon about my
situation. he discribed the surgery he would use. not pretty my friend's.so i'll leave it at that.

i want to thank all of you for your kind word's and prayer's..i cannot find the correct word's to say how i feel.melanie, betty, sonwith and gail, your heart's are full of kindness.God know's......

i will try my best to be back on here. but please excuse me if not in a timely manner.
be well , gary

I re-read my last post and sheesh even though I believe in what I wrote it sounds a little cold. That wasn't my intent.

Sometimes when we attempt to be encouraging we can come across all wrong.

Please know I wish you nothing but the best, and that you to have success all rolled up.

Good luck

quoting gar....
"yes Mz Cup, i do glow in the dark. come on over. i will turn off the light's , so you can see..lol.. " gary, you give new money to show and tell!!! [lol] [lol]

wow, 5 days in the hospital; but at least the worst going on was there where they could properly take care of you and give you the best care/support they could! [group hug] [kiss]

double yes, on HANG OUR FLAGS WITH PRIDE!

tonight was devoted to patriotic tv shows for us:

60 minutes had 1 entire hour devoted to an IOWA Natl. Guard unit deployed almost 2 yrs. ago, FATHERS, SONS, & BROTHERS, where majority of the unit were those 3 categories, and how they lost 5-7 of their members. interviewed the wives/parents, etc. it was tastefully done; outstanding job by scott, 60 minutes reproter.

then pbs, MEMORIAL DAY CELEBRATION, our wonderful annual salute to the fallen veterans, those currently in war, etc. was raining out there.

afterwards another pbs special with an IOWA band that plays glen miller type music; most enjoyable. our evening went really fast.

for the 1st time, we won't be coming to the cemetaries later today. i'm NOT walking well yet; too unsteady, hard to get going, and i don't want my hip to POP out after 2 months!

gary, we understand, when you feel up to it, please post; otherwise, you know you are in our thoughts and prayers here/there! [group hug] [kiss]

Was your sister able to take care of the poms for you while you were in the hospital?

Are they being good while you are home?

RE: Memorial Day....I recently cruised down the street to the local man made lake/park.

They have a wall of those who have died serving their country from our local town.

They also have plaques from each branch of service.

I have never lived in a town before that has something like this.

It was good to see and very well done.

I can see Main street from my apartment. The flags are flying up and down Main STreet on the old time lamp posts.

For some reason, I am enjoying watching them wave.

I keep thinking of you and thinking of how brave and courage you are.

Do you have someone at home to help you through this and get you to the hospital and medical appointments?

Pat those little Poms on the behind and tell them I said hi.

Gary, I'm guilty of not reading "Support" board lately -- just found this today - yikes. I'm so sorry you're in this battle, but cancer doesn't know who it's pickin' on this time!! We've missed your wonderful dry humour here. Sending warm healing thoughts and prayers your way.

And a hug, too!

I posted a new thread about Gary's Caring Bridge Site, but thought many of you would come back to the original thread to see if Gary updates posts.

However, I'm also providing the link to Gary's Caring Bridge site so you can see his updates there. Between many of your help we are able to get periodic updates from Gary and we post them to the Caring Bridge website versus here.

Not saying Gary won't come back on lymenet to give his thanks and updates, (but he is tired and going through a rough time now) so for those who didn't know WE created a site here it is:

http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/garynorbut

He needs our support.
Thanks,
Diane

i tried to post thankyou's on the caring bridge site. they will not let me on there.go figure!!

it never occured to me to post something on here.there are time's that i have my head so far up my( ha! bet you thought i was gonna say it). is true tho.

you people have shown me so much kindness , my word's cannot express.when i really think about it,i wonder why folk's show kindness to someone they never met.is it the way we were bought up? were you born this way? you are the people who stop at an accident, get out of your car and help the injured.you don't just gawk an drive on by...why do you do this?

i accept your kindness, without knowing that answer.you all should wear your halo, with pride.( even tho some of you, your halo is alittle crooked)..lol..

thankyou from the bottom of my heart.your the best.
be well , gary

psssst.. i will try and come back here as often as i can remember..........

[hi] Gary, WHAT A SURPRISE TO FIND YOU HERE! [Wink] [bow]

so glad to talk to you again my friend! been sure thinking about you; 8 days till you go now! i sure hope they can give you HOPE on the newest things available for your esophagus cancer!

gary, i was born and brought up this way! my dad was sick his entire life so our relatives, neighbors, and friends would come in and put in and take out the crops as they were ready. this went on his entire farm life.

when he was well and recuperated, he'd turn around and give back to others during their illnesses that cropped up.

i was the chair of our state toys for tot campaign for 1,000 in our complex for 4 years. i had to give a wrap up summary to our commissioners each year.

i used the above example of my dad's illnesses one time. told them this was my way of paying back for all the many kindnesses given to dad/our family over decades. my head boss division director/those attending loved what i said from my heart and nothing was written down.

gary, YOU FORGOT TO TELL US HOW YOUR TOMATOES ARE COMING! we're envious you know! take care and "remember" again, will you? [group hug] [kiss] [group hug]

Gary,

My thoughts and prayers are with you during this challenging time!

My neighbor had esophogeal cancer and had the surgical procedure you refer to. That was at least 2 years ago and he is doing well. I saw him at the local ice cream place last week enjoying a malt and he was smiling, laughing, and had a sparkle in his eye I hadn't seen in a while.

best wishes my friend. We're all pulling for you!

NOT good news. gary needs major cheering up. please tell him how you've been, how your vegetable garden is coming, how your pets are, anything but his health right now ..... he loves getting his mind over the latest news.

i also had a nice PM from him tonight, and posts like the above paragraph REALLY MAKE HIS DAY, putting smiles on his face, etc. he's very grateful for them.

gary, we miss you and your humor here! [group hug] [kiss] [group hug]

I'm so sorry you're going through all this. [Frown]

May God give you the strength to endure this difficult time (and a nice, big, fat, juicy T-bone when it's all over [Big Grin] !).

Hopefully, you too will be sitting around laughing and smiling soon.

I'll keep you in my prayers. [group hug]
May God bless and heal you. [kiss]

Hurry up & get well! I'm sure the poms would like to have the left-over bone. [Big Grin]
