A new bill was signed into law at the end of 2007. It mandates that if the National Institutes of Health (NIH) funds the research, the publication of that research must appear in PubMed Central within a year of its publication in peer-reviewed journals. The article will come up in a search of PubMed, with a link to the full-text article in PubMed Central.
This is very important for the Lyme community, giving patients and researchers full online access within twelve months to a lot of information that previously could not be accessed without a subscription. The NIH contributed $26 million to Lyme disease research in the year 2000, so we are talking about a lot of research.
