Does anyone know why SSDI would consider me "no longer insured" after December 31, 2008?
In my application, the phone interviewer made the date of disability December 31, 2003 because I was working between 20 hours a week and 30 hours a week until then (or so).
So, it was a pretty random date.
I have continuued to pay into the system every year since then, although I have unlikely had enough for a Quarter credit.
What is the 5 year period they keep talking about?

NOTE:
You have to have 20 quarters of work credit within the last 10 years (40 quarters), so the point when you reach five years since your last quarter is likely to be your Date Last Insured. *********************************************

Why would they go through all the numbers and say I was eligible to file then?
I just can't figure it out.
And, I don't understand, "the point when you reach five years since your last quarter". Why?

What is the date of your disability claim? I believe your disability date has to be within five years of your work credit being proper. Does that make sense? In other words, today may be 11/14/09, but your disability "start" date may be three years back, and maybe you just started the filing process today.

I just sent in the appeal and decided not to worry until I have more information to go on. . rather than spending energy in conjecture mode.
I did see the independent evaluator's comments today though.
He was a Psychiatrist and he said, very loud and clear that he is ONLY making a determination in the psych, where he finds me capable of remedial tasks only. But, still able to work.
I like that he said he was NOT able to make a recommendation on the physical.

Date Last Insured (DLI) simply means you were insured through that date. If you have evidence to show you became disabled before 12/31/2008, you may still be able to draw SSD benefits.
You do not have to show that you were disabled at the time you last worked.
For example, if a person worked from 1/1/1995 through 12/31/1999, they have earned enough credits to qualify for disability benefits. Through 12/31/2004. 20 quarters. If that same person did not return to work after 12/31/1999, then was in a serious car accident on 12/01/2004 and as a result has quadraplegia, he/she is still insured through 12/31/2004 and therefore qualifies for SSD. If that same person was in the accident on 01/15/2005, the ability to draw SSD has expired.
Supplemental Security Income is entirely needs-based and has nothing to do with work credits. Income would have to be very low and the individual would have to be found to be disabled to draw these benefits.
Hope that is clear as mud.
