I just found out a couple hours ago that I might be having emergency port surgery!

I was in the ER on Thanksgiving night because of a complication and now the surgeons office is saying I will most likely need a new port.

So they're going to do an x-ray and/or whatever tests they need to decide if it's just a clot, or the port is "broken."

I'm requesting prayers please! I had a horrible reaction to the Vancomycin they gave me last time, so I won't be getting that again, but the surgery was rough in general for me.

Prayers please!! [Smile]

Hey there!

If they think the port is "broken"...it CAN be tested WITHOUT removing it.

There should be an interventional radiologist at the hospital. This specialist can do a "dye study" on the port to determine if it is OK. Get your primary care physician, surgeon, or LLMD to authorize this simple test.

I've found the ER is not knowledgeable about ports. They told me the port has to be removed to test it, but that was wrong! It was the opinion of the ER doctor that long-term antibiotics for Lyme was not justified. He wanted it removed to prevent IV Lyme treatment.

Also, you may want to speak with the nursing supervisor of a cancer treatment center. They work with ports every day. You can ask your questions and what they recommend you do to salvage the port. They're too expensive to remove without a good reason.

You may have difficulty getting a new port. Get the surgeon's authorization for a new port in writing.

A dye test: the radiologist accesses the port, injects dye, and watches the dye's flow as it's injected on x-ray. This is an easy, easy, easy test...and gives you an immediate answer if the port is OK.

Just wanted to let everyone know, there was a fibrin sheath on the tip of the catheter so they got rid of that and all is good!!

Hsh, I have a great interventional radiology surgery center where I go and they are fantastic! They were just going to take the old one out and put the new one in, if the old one was indeed defective.

They did a dye study and like I said all was fine.

Thanks for all the prayers!
