I know many people have tried and suggested contacting Oprah (me included!) to do a show on Lyme disease. Nothing has happened so far.

Last week, Oprah did a show on puppy mills because of a BILLBOARD AD she saw on her way to work in Chicago!! Apparently, it was very effective because it caught her eye (yes, we all know what a dog lover she is!).

She asked the gentleman responsible for the billboard ad how much it cost and he told her "10,000". I know it's an awful lot of money, but are there any Lyme organizations who could afford to do this?

Just thought I'd add my two cents in and ask. Wish we had the money to do this, but, unfortunately, we are drowning in bills like many others here!!

I know my father has written her about me many times to encourage her to do a show on lyme disease and how it affects us all...

I know she must be busy. But I also have other opinions...ill keep quiet. ;]

I don't understand why she would do a show on a man being pregnant. Which by-the-way it wasn't a man, the man was born a women and not do a show about a disease that is destroying lives and families. That is the worst part about this disease, seems like no one cares only the people who are living it or lived it and some are so sick they can't care.

Hey hey hoping...

Good idea! I believe SC had a bill board years ago... which was great! Don't know if they still do.. but I love the idea. If not SC.. maybe NC? I think it was SC though.

Oh GEEZE!!!

I completely forgot. I am NOT allowed to talk about billboards. Oh boy.. I am in trouble now.

[shake]

You see, the last time I tried to talk up bill boards and approach the topic... somehow Sizzled and Beverly and a few others decided I just needed to walk around town ... or down the highway with a message on ME... on my "rear-end" as a matter of fact...

Because they said my butt was as big as a bill board!

[Embarrassed]

PLEASE don't tell them I am posting here on this topic!!! OH MY!

Anyhow.. just between us...

I've always wanted to rent a bulletin board just outside Baltimore.. along the route into town on the highway... that was HUGE and in everyones face. Never mind it cost thousands a day to do it... but anyhow....

On it.. and keep in mind it would be near the front door of Hopkins and the BILLIONS of tax-payers dollars no-health department in that location....

And it would have a big black back ground with the following words splashed across it in brilliant lime green... saying...

LYME DISEASE IS SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED

Can you imagine what would that would do?

WOW!

[lol]

Anyhow... that was not my point. My point was...

From what I understand.. Dear Oprah had a bad experience with Lyme "people" in the past.. a bad bad experience.. and it will be a freezing day in the Florida Keys before she pays any attention to anyone talking Lyme.

I just don't want to see you get discouraged. Ok?

I am NOT saying to stop trying.. only that her past experience with Lyme "people" was bad.. and it may make the entire topic taboo in her eyes because of that incident.

But YES on the bulletin board.

Michigan has had a billboard for some years now.
You can see it at the Michigan Lyme Disease Association website, right at the top of the home page.

I have written to Oprah at least three times in the past, pleading for a show on lyme disease.

When I first became lyme literate, I was informed by K.D. that there was a rift in the lyme community. I wish I had not asked why or what it was about, because going down that road exposed some very disfunctional personalities.

I don't know if Oprah ran into one of these disfunctional people along the way, but if she did, I could see why she would stay away.

But, certainly one experience does not give a complete example of what we are all like.

Then too, the bad experience could have been the "politic" attached to the lyme subject. My understanding is that after the beef industry took her to court, she had to seek counseling becuase she was falling apart over it.

That is how she met Dr. Phil I believe, during this crisis in her life.

Perhaps it is the politics she doesn't want to touch.

I can't say that I respect either of these as possible causes of staying away. Doing the right thing often means swimming against the current.

What would one want more with all her money..staying on the air five days a week, or exposing the fraud behind what has got to be millions suffering world wide. ( I live in Switzerland, and I can tell you they are far behind here, and stick to the IDSA guidelines.)

Nevertheless, to take the risk and do a show on the realities of lyme disease would require her have complete conviction that chronic lyme exists. Who without lyme can say he or she believe this, unless a close loved one is infected?

When my family was seeing Dr. J in N.C., his P.A. that attended to my family told me that they were working on a lyme cookbook. NO, not cooking up ticks, but getting recipies from people with lyme. The P.A. also told me Oprah had a friend with lyme and said she (Oprah) would be interested in the cookbook.

Don't know where that went after Dr. J was shut down for being too brave in the face of fraud.

To all receiving this, please take 5-10 minutes to register for OPRAH'S LYME BOARD, where I started a request to do a show on Alex in near future instead of hundreds of individual requests.

Please help out this family whose gone thru so much these last 3 years! God bless you all!
Please forward it MINUS ANY "to" NAMES LISTED AT TOP to your family, friends, GROUP LISTS, etc.

Let's have THOUSANDS of requests to do this special show that Alex can get diagnosed correctly and TREATED to give her QUALITY OF LIFE!

Bettyg, IA activist

PS .. for the "wordy" ones who might exceed OPRAH'S word limit, label it part 1 of 2, or how many pages you need ok! We've done this before.

Write it in WORD or your word processor; DO A WORD COUNT; and see how many pages you need to copy that amount and paste to her board!!

"AlEX'' Alexandria Hermstad, 14, Iowa is DYING from a lyme disease CO-INFECTION, bartonella, and no dr. can tell them WHY! Please do a show on Alex's story in NEAR future since she is critical!!

Oprah, please have a show in the NEAR FUTURE about Alex's story going from a healthy 11-year old twin sister, to not being able to get out of bed the next day.

She's been to countless doctors and specialists; none of them have been able to come up with what is definitely wrong with her and give her treatment to get her off the ventilator into REMISSION !!

She is paralyzed, on a ventilator, and unable to swallow or speak. The uniqueness of this case I think stands out. She was 11 when symptoms first began. Hopefully, we can get someone to take interest in her story and help.

She tested positive on the QRIBb, mycoplasma pneumoniae, HHV-6, and most recently bartonella. Her western blots were CDC-negative , but there was evidence of borrelia, which is LYME/TICK disease. Bartonella is a CO-INFECTION of lyme disease.

Her website is also listed below for additional details; please read her journal of her journey to date!

http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/angelsforalex

Oprah, thank you for your consideration of having a show about Alex in the NEAR future since Alex is critical!

We're hoping one of your assistant's will call Alex's Mom, Lori, in the NEAR future with a YES, we'll do an Alex show.

One of your assistant's talked to Alex's MOM on April 15, 2008 !!

as much as i feel for alex and her story i belive she is the wrong one to use in this. she is the extreme of this terrible disease we all struggle with

although it seems logical to pull on oprah heart strings with that and get an in, i think we are better with the norm - extremely low quality of life, inability to function, loss of jobs etc to the barley holding on levels of keeping it going.

i think the answer is in numbers not in "case" may be we would be better putting together a request for show and have verifiable signaures to submit to oprah network.

the recent happenings with blumenthal and idsa is a prime time to hit her up again but with the realistic approach not an extreme emotional approach - sometimes the kiss way is the best way

i think the other issue is

dr oz

i can guarnatee you if dr oz belived it the theories that we do it would already be done
