I am a doctor, actual a fake doctor a dentist. I went thru 4 years of dental school and 2 years residency. It is up to the doctors once they leave medical school to keep current on ALL SUBJECTS OF MEDICINE, THEY ARE DOCTORS, AND MUST KNOW CURRENT DISEASES AND TREATMENTS. i took the same pathology and medicine courses they did and guess what we learned, malaria, tb, snake bites, all very relevant to todays world. I was a very good dentist for 22 years prior to my illness and it was up to me and me alone to keep up with modern techniques, materials and procedures. Everything in dentistry changes 100% every 5 years, so you have to go to classes to keep in touch with the real world. Medical school world is obsolete when you leave medical school. the ama requires the docs to take maybe 30 hours of credits a year, dentist in pa only have to take cpr and 30 credits every 3 years. at 10 credits a years and 1 hour course per credit this amounts to 1 ten hour course per year.THESE COURSES DON'T EVEN HAVE TO BE IN MEDICINE OR DENTISTRY,SURPRISE SURPRISE. THEY GOT YOU ALL FOOLED.you can take a cruise and have 2 hours of mornig courses on everything from golfing to how to answer the phone to how to bill the insurance companies, and nver have to take a medically related course. aniek , i'm sorry to inform you that you have been mislead by the medical community. since the advent of hmo's the docs don't make the kind of money they used to and now they see you for 30seconds if your lucky. sure there are still many good docs but the average is declining every year and the young kids don't give a damn about the patients only the money. so this is the facts of our medical system in the year 2004, quite a bit different then 15 years ago when docs cared, went to medical courses and wanted to be the best. NOW THEY JUST WANT TO GET THRU THERE LOAD OF 100 HMO PATIENTS FOR THE DAY AND GO HOME EXHAUSTED

Up again on BEHALF of our dedicated doctors, dentists, nurses...and those others in caring fields.
It is an impossiblity to keep up with current research on all diseases (on behalf of the doctors/dentists).
To treat patients at all hours of the day and night, to maintain a normal life with a family AND to maintain current knowledge on sooo many diseases is humanly impossible.
There aren't enough hours in the day.
But...they need to listen respectfully to those who have researched their own particular disease and be "open" to learning from all others.
And...get the pharmaceutical company ads OUT OF THE MEDICAL TEXTBOOKS and journals. Fill them with information, not ads.
We need to be much more "proactive" and realize that nutrition, what we eat, indeed effects our state of health as well as getting SOME exercise.
Nutrition should be a significant part of medical training.
There can be a "melding".

there is enough hours in the day to learn and practice at the same time, i did it for 23 years. they need to change the certification laws in the states to require that the docs must take all there hours of continuing education in actual medicine. teachers take all there courses in teaching, real estate take theirs in real estate, why can't physicians take their credits in medicine rather than how to fill out an insurance form and beat the system. the md's put this all on themselves by allowing hmo's to take hold and prosper. now ten years later they are all crying about it. they control medicine not the insurance companies. the ama can have all the doctors in the country go on vaction for one month and when they return, there will be no more hmo's. i know this is drastic but drastiv times call for drastic measures. our medical sytem went from the best in the world to one of the worst in the world in 10 years. medicine must be given back to the doctors, even though there are many bad ones, maybe an abitration commitee for the state can oversee claims and malpracitce to have some kind of peer review. do you understand that there is no peer review in medicine or dentistry, and the docs can basically do what they want, without any recourse. the only docs that get peer review are the ones in hospitals all else are on there own. yes it is tuff being a doc, long hours ,lots of studying, and more and more education. however, it is the profession they chose and swore an oath to uphold.if you can stand up to the standard of care in this country you should hang up your shingle and retire as a doc. sorry for the speech, but this is how I feel about the state of medicine in 2004. my opinion by Dr. David Klein docdave130
