I was diaganosed with Lyme and Bebesia in Oct 2004. After abx and Mepron treatment for a month, my Babesia count went way up. One step forward 2 steps back. "Modern medicine" says I should be healed. Has anyone had a similar reaction with Babesia?

Welcome to LymeNet.
So sorry you need info from this website, but I'm glad you're here.

Don't know how long you've had Lyme & Babesia, but that could partly explain what's going on.

I had Lyme & Babesia for years before getting treatment.
One month of Mepron & Zithromax didn't do a thing with my Babesia.
I took 2 months of both. Thought I was over it, but after a month, my symptoms were coming back.
Took 2 more months of Mepron & Zith & symptoms had cleared up again.

I've been off antibiotics (abx) for 22 months now, but I suspect that possibly Babesia is very gradually coming back.

If you had an established case of Babesia, I don't think 1 month of treatment would be enough.

Read what Dr B says about Co-Infections, especially Piroplasm (Babesiosis) in "Diag Hints & Treat Guidelines..." www.ilads.org/burrascano_1102.html

Have to run. Will check back later.

I had the same thing happen. But, unfortunately, after I had the "just in case" treatment for Babs, about 4 to 6 weeks of Mepron/Zith, I went downhill. Doc said it could not be Babs, as I had been treated.

But, guess what, I suffered for another 1 1/2 years, then retested with the Igenex FISH test, and had a big fat positive. Treated again, then still positive.

If you are in the same boat, forget traditional treatment. You are likely now resistent, and that stuff is too expensive.

Check out Arteminisin. I do much better going on and off that. Do a search on this site and you will find lots of info. You can order it from organic-pharmacy.com. The Nutricology product is only $16 a bottle. This company is in NC, in the Asheville area. I am from NC too.

Good luck to you.

Hi Tick borne - I was diagnosed in October 2004 too after 6 months of being seriously ill. I am in NC too...moved here in March and was sick in May. Hang in there. I did one month worth of Mepron and Zithro and feel that the babesia is not completely gone. I was not retested though so I don't know what my count is. I may try the Artimisin.

Take care and hope the babs stays away...

if you only did Babesia treatment for 1 month then it is more than likely not enough. Normally Babesia treatment is 4 months of Mepron +Zithromax (or Ketek) and Artemesia. You also have to be off the babs meds for 2 weeks in order to get an accurate retest for the disease. What lab did your babesia tests?

Hello,

It sounds like you haven't had near enough Babs treatment.

I have another 8 weeks left to do on Mepron, when I'm finished I will have been on it 7.5 months. I have also upped the dosage for last 12 weeks. I also take Artemesia.

My LLMD said only one drug for Babs is not enough, has to be two-pronged, therefore the Artemesia and Mepron, and I also take Biaxin. (as well as now Bicillin, but that is not for Babs).

Don't get too discouraged. Babesia can be very tenacious and seems to require much longer treatment than "modern medicine" claims. It took months for me to get a diagnosis and many months of different medications including artemesia to finally turn the corner.

I have been on Mepron for 10+ months. My Dr. just added in a higher dose of Zithromax because the symptoms were coming back. Babs is very hard to get. I have 2 months left of the med combo.

My LLMD has people with babesia on mepron/zith for at least 6 months.

I have been taking mepron/ketek for 3 1/2 months. My most recent babesia test came back negative, but the dr nevertheless wants to keep me on mepron for another couple of months. Wants 3 months of negative babesia tests.
