For the past several years I have been complaining about what I thought was a mosquito infestation around my house. They would come out and tell me they were midges not mosquitoes, and not to worry because they were of the non-biting variety. Finally yesterday I got fed up and traped some, took them to vector control today, and in fact they appear to be biting midges. The Vector control technician's exact words to me were they were not what he was expecting. I had already guessed this because I put them under my microscope yesterday and they looked to me to be of the biting variety. They are going to put out a trap today to capture some females to officially confirm, since all I captured were males.
These things are everywhere, it is the female that actually bites, when she is reporductive mode. When I asked about disease transmission I was told that they were not really associated much with human infection.
As I did more research on the web what I really found out is that not much research has been done involving midges. In fact they could be as serious vectors as mosquitoes, but no one has put enough money behind research to confirm or deny.
They are a much bigger problem when it comes to controlling them and that might be why research has been low. Because of their size they can get through conventional screening and much smaller holes in houses. I have lots of them in the house.
One reason for the lack of research is the fear by the government that if infact they do spread disease they doint want to panic the public. Just one more case of the public not being informed. I did see that enough research has been done to show that they can transmit parasites, as well as Cholera. Since I am flanked by a water treatment plant to the south of us and a dump to the north of us, who knows what the blazing h*ll we are being infected with.
Last year we a number of West Nile cases near us and I am concerned about that. One thing I do know getting support from the county will be a absolute waste of time. Just one more thing that they can deny.
