Is it typical to have a lot of unexplained bruising? I just found an ugly bruise on my ring finger and I don't remember whacking it on anything. I recently have had two other inexplicable beauties on my leg. Is this typical of Lyme, or using all these antibiotics, or perhaps Mepron, which I take for Babesia? I'm asking here, but plan also to call my doc tomorrow.

I have had a lot of unexplained bruising (way before abx).

I get a lot of bruises on my legs -- seems like I wake up with them.

Some are probably from bumping into things but I just don't remember having done it.

I have had some unexplained bruises. I think it is just a lyme thing or babesia. I read it on a symptom list once.

I found a symptom list for babesia that lists bruising as a symptom.

20. What signs and symptoms would lead a doctor to suspect a Babesia infection in a patient? How many strains of Babesiosis have been identified and how many are commonly tested for in commercial labs?

The following signs/symptoms may be present in those infected with Babesiosis: Fatigue* Arthralgias* Myalgia* Drenching sweats* Headaches* Emotional lability* Depression* Dark urine* Splenomegaly* Dizziness* Nausea and vomiting* Cough* Dyspnea* Fever* Chills* Hepatosplenomegaly* Jaundice* Malaise* Shortness of breath* Bleeding tendencies, bruising*

Thrombocytopenia* Hemoglobinuria* Hyperesthesia* Pulmonary edema* Encephalopathy* Low to normal range leukocyte counts* Possible elevated levels of dehydrogenase, bilirubin, transaminase* Anorexia*

Approximately 25%- 66% of Babesia patients are known to be co-infected with Lyme disease. These symptoms may continue for long periods of time, decrease, then return. A low Babesiosis titer (IgG) often indicates a chronic infection.

An acute or current infection may show a higher reading on the IgM test initially. There are over 100 species of Babesia in the United States but only ONE or TWO species are currently checked by commercial labs.

Hope this helps,
Lisi

Ehrlichia

Transmitted to dogs by ticks, this is characterized by a decrease in platelets, red blood cells and white blood cells. It's transmitted by the brown dog tick, and caused devastating losses of military working dogs in Vietnam.

Signs show in about eight to 20 days: Bleeding abnormalities (bruising or bleeding from the mouth, nose, anus, urethra), severe weight loss, debilitation, tender abdomen, pale gums, and neurological signs. Secondary infections are common. Some animals may be chronically infected and show no signs.

Treatment is with antibiotics. Recent evidence suggests that humans can become infected with the Ehrlichia organism or one similar to it. The disease in humans causes fever, nausea, vomiting, rash and weight loss.

Babesiosis

This is a tick-borne disease that occurs worldwide and affects dogs and cats. It is caused by a protozoal parasite. The most common carrier is the brown dog tick. The organisms infect the red blood cells. Some animals may show no signs and act as carriers.

Clinical signs are pale membranes, yellow skin or eyes, bruising, blood in the urine, not eating, lethargy, vomiting, shock, coma or even death. There is a drug available for treatment, but it is not approved for use in the United States. As with Lyme disease, quick removal of the tick is paramount, since it takes two to three days of feeding for transmission to occur.

Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever.

This is a problem in the western and southeastern United States; it can be transmitted to humans. The disease is caused by a bacteria-like organism and transmitted by both the brown dog tick and the wood tick. There may be no apparent signs in the dog or signs similar to those in humans. In humans, high fever, chills, muscle pain, severe headaches, bruising, and a rash that develops within three days characterize the disease. Treatment in dogs and humans is with antibiotics. Early discovery and prompt removal of ticks may reduce the chance of infection, since it takes five to 20 hours of feeding before transmission occurs.

Thanks to you all. I do have Babesia and I was wondering about it, but hadn't seen it on a list of symptoms yet. Ah, sweet mystery of life....

Two things come to mind

1-babesia

2-normal gut flora needed to make vit k needed for clotting are killed by abx so less vit k may be available. to counter that i drink a cup of green tea daily-very high in vit k

I have really bad bruising too. I've been treated for both lyme and babs, with mepron and zith, in addition to many other abx.

Abx does not seem to improve the bruising, and my CBCs always come back OK.

I too drink green tea every day, and take supplenents.

I had a horrible nasal hemmorhage (nosebleed does not seem to adequately describe the amount of bleeding!), and my ENT said to back off garlic, EPO, and Omega 3s, as well as NSAIDS).

It makes me worry-- because my vessels seem to be fargile, and/or I bleed/brise so easily, could I be more susceptible to a stroke (brain hemorhage?) My BP is on the low side of normal.

I have "crops" of bruises -- the traditional "black & blue" type -- and this has been since initial infection. Some of them are quite huge. They are not connected to bumps or injuries. I only found out in the last few years that these can be associated with Babesia. My tests for Babesia have fluctuated according to lab (of course) but I've had "air hunger" and extreme, drenching sweats, so what would you guess? Anyway, not a bad idea to get a platelet level just in case it's something else, but yup, happened to me and still does even on the B. treatments sometimes.

Ihad Ehrlichia in June this year-not a pleasant experience;sweated out 10 lbs. of fluid in 2 days! Lyme WB came back positive also, but I've thought for a while that I might even have Babesia because of the sx I keep having despite abx-when I did Artemesia, I herxed a lot. I've had those bruises come and go for many years now.Right now I'm having a lot of hand pain and stiffness while on Doxy. The IDS wants to retest next month while I'm off abx--we'll see what shows up.BTW, I never get nosebleeds, but the Ehrlichia gave me one! Keep on keepin' on ! [Cool]

In my case bruising has improved with vitamin d supplementation.

Also bioflavanoids help. These are included in the vitamin c supplement I take.

Besides the bruising, I've also noticed something else very strange. If I get a cut, bug bite, rug burn (from falling), etc. .... when it heals I'm left with a scar. Even a simple scratch will leave a scar. Anybody else noticed this?

Yes, I'm having both bruising, very very slow healing, and subsequent scarring with each minor injury to the skin. Not A CLUE about the cause...
