Came across this...given the cost of GF specialty foods wondered if anyone has claimed costs on taxes, and does anyone know if you have to have an "official MD diagnosis?"

Tax Deduction
To make the purchase of expensive gluten free food a little easier, there is a tax deduction available for eating gluten-free. If there is a version of your gluten-free food that normally contains gluten (bread is an example), you can deduct the difference in price between these items. If you are buying a specialty item that you normally wouldn't buy if you could eat gluten, then you can deduct the whole price of the item. Shipping costs are also deductible if your unreimbursed medical expenses exceed 7.5 percent of your adjusted gross income. All of the expenses mentioned (food, specialty food and shipping) are reimbursable under a health care spending account of pretax income. Just remember to save your receipts so your accountant can document them!
