My fingernail whites seem to turn clear sometimes. I shoved a penny under the clear part and can see the penny right through the part that should be white. Some nails have it worse than others. What does this mean? I never had it before, just the past month. Can someone tell me what causes this??

My nails are extremely brittle, and split into layers like an onion, as well as crack
vertically, They are always sore, and it feels like the connective tissue holding them on is
weakening. my nail beds are getting smaller, and my once long, and strong natural nails are
short stubby, jagged and crack no matter how I care for them. I can't even button a garment
without breaking my thumb nails further! I just ordered the LIghtworks, thinking it would help
with my nails...I'm at a loss.
My LMD told me to take more calcium, and biotin, but it hasn't done anyting so far for my nails.
I also have Lupus, so I think this is definately autoimmune related.
I have had symthetic nails in the past, not to make them longer or prettier, just to keep them from breaking more and hurting, and maybe that has contributed to the problem. I would

I get that sometimes Nobody, especially after I get out of the shower....and it will last for a few hours if not the rest of the day. They will also be really flexible.
I don't know if it means anything in terms of mineral deficiencies, etc.
I don't worry too much about mine. It's not like it is painful....at the most the fact that they will bend a little is just a minor inconveinence. I spend more time just worrying about my fatigue, etc.

Here's a link for nail disorders. It's pretty complicated but very helpful.

My personal experience has been that when I'm not absorbing foods very well, my nails become paper thin, clear with no color in the nail itself and they tear easily.
Have you been tested for anemia or nutritional deficiencies?
Some possible causes of pale nails or white nails include: Anemia - causes pale nails and lengthwise ridges under nails. Iron deficiency Arsenic poisoning - causes white lines and horizontal ridges under nails.

my nails have deep ridges in them and the only nail with a white moon is my thumb.
they peel and have layers also but are a little darker than the regular nail.
i wear several coats of sally hansen's nail repair all the time. and sometimes even it peels off and won't stay on.

How many of you had done a lot of detoxification and what detox methods did you use. I'm guessing if you use a number of methods they may have depleted or unbalanced the minerals in your body.
I would guess you need zinc, supplemented daily beyond multivitamins. You should seek a doctors opinion on this. If you have a deficiency it can cause havoc in your body. Another is copper, from reading the symptoms causing nail to not appear correctly both of these metals if missing could be the cause of your problems.
Look on the internet and look for article associated with nails and both copper and zinc.
There are a couple of nuts that could naturally supplement for nail health, cashews, and walnuts. You might want to add these to your diet and see if helps before you supplement.
