Hi I just had my first LLMD appt on 6/24/08 and he confirmed lyme from the tests a different doc did in Feb of this year. He took one look and said definitely Lyme.
He started me on 300mg 3x/day of clindamycin, pro-biotics, vitamin C, vitamin E and mulitvitamins. He said this was just the beginning.
We arent able to do IV abx b/c my ins won't pay and he said the hosp won't let him admit me b/c they don't recognize this as a serious enough illness or something like that.
I was just wondering if anyone else has tried or been on the clindamycin? What were your results? Did you have a herx reaction?
My doc did say something about adding doxy in 3 weeks too. He said he can't give all the abx all at once. I'm a mountain of problems he said and he has to chip away little by little.
He is doing the testing for co-infections i think and b/c my calcium levels are high he suspects something is wrong with my thyroid or para-thyroid glands. He is doing the work-up for that too. Has anyone else been tested or have probs with the thyroid? He is thinking its my para-thyroid glands that have a problem
Any info or advice is appreciated. thanks!

I was on a combination of Clindamycin/Plaquenil (10days on) Biaxin/Plaquenil (10days on). I alternated these combos every 10 days. To be honest while on Clindamycin I felt like I was really doing well, but the Biaxin would make me feel worse, so I dreaded the 10 days I was on that combo. Finally I started to back slide all together on these and recently just started Rifampin. I have been on ABX since August of 2007 so coming up on a year. The other ABX that helped me some was Doxy, but I got to where I could not stomach it anymore so I had to quit that one too.
Good luck.

I have been on Clindamyacin 3 times (10 days at a pop) since December for pharynx infections. Unfortunately, I have NOT been on any antibiotics for the lyme disease because of becoming allergic to almost all of them.
ENT said I needed to be on the Clindamyacin, and since I had never tried that one, I went for it. I handled it fairly well, but you have to be VERY careful with your stomach.
Lots of probiotics and use the good kind (I use the refrigerated kind)
Report any bowel problems while on Clindamyacin immediately to your doctor.
I also have a problem with my parathyroid levels. Mine are out of range...way too high. The endocrinologist tells me that parathyroid hormone is elevated because my Vit D is so drastically low.
I am in the process of having it re-tested.

Was a good drug for me. Not sure what it is treating exactly. That is the problem with broad spectrum abx and a situation where there are unidentified bugs in us and in the ticks.
In fact, the combo of zith and clindamycin returned my lower back to functional again, after a terrible year. I should mention that the clindamycin was pulsed, one week on, one week off. Maybe that would help to lessen the danger of colitis?

Watch out if you are on Clindamycin! That drug is the # 1 offender for causing c.difficile colitis. There are many other more effective Lyme and babesia treatments than that outdated protocol! In my experience, it's not worth it to be on clindamycin for any reason. Be careful, watch for diarrhea and make sure you are on atleast 4 caps of Florasotr per day to prevent c.diff. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clostridium_difficile http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/c-difficile/DS00736/DSECTION=causes

thank you everyone for your input. I am seeing my LLMD on 7-10-08 and will ask him about continuing with the clindamycin.
He did also put me on 6 pills per day of duo-dophilus and 2 pills per day of Flora.
I have been on it for two full days with out any major probs, just an upset stomach. I am hoping I don't get worse but am bracing myself. If it gets bad (diarrhea or awful cramping) I will call the doc and switch.
thanks again!

Want to hear something weird? I also am on Clindamycin, but I use it as a topical gel for my face.
Before I knew it was from Lyme, I complained to my obgyn that I had developed really bad acne for the first time in my life when I was 24 (approxiamtely the time I think I got Lyme, actual date is unknown).
She prescribed me the Clindamycin gel and I have been acne free for 3 years! Halleluja!!!

there is a prominent llmd that uses IV clindamycin and has success in 11 of the 12 people in his trial.
it may have the ability to cause c diff but so do all abx. if you use probiotics and restore your flora appropriately you will be fine.
good luck

AMAZING Drug: I am on Oral Clindamycin 1500mg a day with 3 x 325 Quinine Sulphate and I switch to IV Clindamycin soon. Im also on other babs meds and IV Rocephin
You MUST use high dosage probiotics and weekly rectal refloridization due to the c.diff risks and then you will be fine.

Before being diagnosed with Lyme, I had had infections during which I ran through a bunch of abx, finally settling on clindamycin as I wasn't allergic to it.
So when I got diagnosed with Lyme, I had clinda in my drawer. I decided to try it, rather than go through the tediousness of testing abx again.
I put myself on 150mg 4x/day, and to my surprise, it worked. Within three days, fatigue, chemical sensitivity and swollen ankles diminished. By the end of a week, all fibromyalgia pain had gone to zero. I was amazed.
I began to herx by the end of a month (got real tired) and had to back down on dosage. Its efficacy lasted six months and then it no longer worked. I'm guessing it's because the bacteria went into hiding.
I kept checking to see whether it would work. Finally, after a year and a half, I was able to see results again. It has been six months and it is still working - ie, it currently reduces joint swelling.
I have been very pleased and would recommend it as a frontline Lyme drug treatment.
Want to add that I also did test lots of Lyme drugs and reacted to them all. So clinda is it for me.
It is my opinion that clindamycin should be listed in Lyme drug protocols as a frontrunner Lyme treatment antibiotic.

For me its hitting my babesia hard but it is also giving me a Lyme herx as that comes 28 days on the dot and i'm herxing so it must work on both, I think the key is to dose it high.
