What are the alternatives to levaquin and rifampin for bart?

Levaquin gave me serious tendon issues (twice), and my liver is unable to detox Rifampin - so both of those are out.

I have had good results with Bactrim and Biaxin - but not sure if those are simply suppressing symptoms.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I've take cipro for bartonella, but it gave me muscle tightness.

I (think) a pre-cursor to tendon issues. [Frown]

Thank you both for responding.

I haven't taken Cipro, but did see huge improvements on Bactrim, after a huge herx. Maybe a longer course of Bactrim would be helpful.

Still open to any and all suggestions...

I've been on Zithromax for several months now - 600mg a day - and it has reduced my Bart symptoms by about 80%. I plan on adding HH caps soon to see if I can't knock out the remaining 20.

From a LLMD's presentation:

Bartonella
 Moxifloxacin 400mg qd-bid or Levofloxacin 500-750 mg qd x 4-12
weeks.
 May add Trimethoprim-Sulfamethoxazole DS bid.
 May use Rifampin 600 mg qd with doxycycline or azithromycin.
 Azithromycin and Doxycycline sometimes effective in combo.
 Linezolid and Tygacil show promise

If co-infections have already been treated with standard orals, can rotate IV
levofloxacin, moxifloxacin, clindamycin or IV rifampin.

I was taking Zithromax, and when I added Plaquenil, I experienced what I interpreted as a Bart herx, though I only stayed on this combo for 6 weeks because the Plaquenil seemed toxic to my body.

So you could consider the Zithro/Plaquenil combo....they say Plaquenil helps Zithro penetrate better.

Good luck!!!!

I think even Minocycline can have an action against Bart....so maybe Mino and Bactrim? or Mino and Zithro? Just a guess.

This is an excellent question. I just discovered that I can't do Rifampin (my Liver enzymes are sky high) and I'm not sure about Levaquon. My Dr. said there is discussion of Cipro being taken off the market!

Thanks for the post. I hope to see even more responses.
