Had very minor dental work done recently -and when injected with the numbing shot (into gum on one side only), I experienced the following:
racing heart sweating sudden anxiety flushing light-headedness feeling that I might faint
It passed in about 20 minutes but we had to suspend the dental work in that time.
Anyone else react this way?
I have developed both POTS and Addison's within the past year, so am wondering if they could have caused this reaction as well.

Yes. My dentist gives me a different (short acting) numbing agent. More shots are usually required but it is much easier to tolerate the extra shots than the symptoms from the regular shots.

There are different kinds of Novocain. I forget what the one ingredient is you reacted to but I can find out for you. I get anxiety from that one ingredient and it lasts for more than one day so I tell all my dentist to never ever give me that kind of Novocain and they don't. I don't need any extra shots of the kind of Novocain my biological dentist uses. Luckily my dental office is very Lyme friendly and the extra oxygen my dentist gives me helps make it all bearable.

Oh I had this happen back in 2003. I became terrified of going to the dentist, I didn't know what caused it and I didn't even tell the dentist what was happening as he was in the other room.
I have spoken with 2 dentists since and it is the epinephrine in the zylocaine (or whatever they use). You can get it without the epi, but the dentists said that it doesn't last as long (the anesthetic that is).
Was the dental work done in the lower jaw??
The dentist told me that there is a major vein there or artery and it's common for it to happen in the lower jaw.
Scared me to death though!
So sorry this happened....don't worry though, it wasn't a reaction, just the medicine getting out into the artery that took it straight to the heart and epi is what happens when you get an adrenaline rush, so it feels like a panic attack.

You need to use one with NO epinephrine. Especially sense you have addisons. I use Carbocaine with no epi and do great on it. You may need more shots as this wears off faster but it also gets out of your sys quicker. You must ask with NO epi. I have arrythmias so cannot ever use epi. Most of us cannot handle epi.

Terry, I'm so glad to know I'm not alone on this one.
Ocean - It was indeed in the lower jaw, so that must be it. It happened just after the shot, didn't take long at all. A terrible feeling.
Bamboo, yes, if you find out the name, I'd love it know it. It would be great to know what your biological dentist uses instead.
And Sk8ter - I will remember to tell them "no epi" in the future, for sure. Do you have Addison's, too? It makes sense that the epi would not be a good plan with that, or with POTS, too.

Yes the same thing happened to me so now I never get novocaine- I just endure the pain of drilling which is crazy but I would rather have that then the other reaction.
If I get a major procedure like a root canal then I will have it but so far I haven't needed one.

Is it that bad to not have it?
I have some cavities but am afraid to go in to get it done because of this.
I never thought to ask if they would let me try without.
I had 3 natural childbirths, is the pain worse than that do you think?
Maybe I should at least ask because I really need to get it done, it just floored me before.
