My LLMD just called and wants me to go on...

Diflucan and Flagyl for 10-14 days

Says my high EOS is indicator of parasites, worms, yeast

So we're going after that.
He said he's gonna look into babesia... but with the stomach bloating and white tongue(that I had 5 days ago on my visit to him)... he suspects parasites/yeast.

btw, my EOS was 27 range (0-7)

Does not sound particularly delightful... Sorry to hear it. Interesting parasite protocol. I understand the Diflucan, but what reason did LLMD give for Flagyl?

Didn't give a reason.

But I do know some LLMD's use flagyl to go after C Diff

Is that a particular type of yeast?

I was put on flagyl for a parasite (blastocystis hominis). It didn't work though.

i might hold off on the flagyl.

the white tongue and bloating is yeast/fungus/etc most likely. diflucan mono therapy is better while off abx...

I've been using diflucan for 5 days on it's own.

Bloating hasn't gone down at all.
Seems like a lack of digestive enzymes or something. Because along with the bloating is weight gain (only in stomach area).
I've put on like 8 lbs (all in my stomach!)

So food isn't getting broken down.

Now that could be a result of yeast or bacterial overgrowth.

I'm gonna do the flagyl + diflucan and see if my LLMD is on to something : )

I agree with djf- I would hold on the flagyl

your symptoms sound like yeast.

Cdiff is not yeast.

Can yeast cause excessive hunger and weight gain around waist/stomach?

I just figured after 5 days of diflucan, nystatin, and garlic that the bloating would go down.

Maybe I'm underestimating a good yeast ifnection!

When I got traveler's diarhhea in West Africa years and years ago (about 20 years ago) and landed in the hospital there, the doctor put me on flagyl.

He said I had an intestinal parasite and the flagyl would cure it. I got the parasite by accidentally ingesting some local water.

He said the locals all have this parasite, but for a traveler not used to it, it would make them sick. I had gotten dehydrated and needed IV fluids I was so sick.

It fixed me right up--like a miracle almost.

When I returned to the U.S., I saw a gastro to be sure everything was all right. It was. They remarked that the doc did a good job on me and that in this country (at that time) flagyl was mostly only used for vaginal yeast infections. But, things were changing. So, they said the African doc was ahead of the American docs when it came to treating intestinal parasites. (African doc was a teaching professor and also had his own clinic where he practiced. He told me he had studied medicine in Scotland.)

I took a quick look on the net and it said c. diff. is a bacterium.

To prevent yeast in the future, follow Burrascano's yeast prevention diet (basically, eat only meat and non-starchy vegetables), take probiotics, and drink kefir. No sugar, no carbs (bread, potatoes, cereal, anything made with white flour), and basically no fruit. Just lemons and similar.

But, you have got to kill off this case of yeast with meds now.

If you have systemic yeast you will need 1-6 months of diflucan @ 200mg daily.

Add nystatin 3 pills 2x daily w/ GOOD probiotics.

Stop the garlic as it can worsen stomach irritation and may be causing it.

Watch the diet closely, tighten up on the cheating foods.

You could also have bad stomach bacteria in which case a comprehensive digestive stool analysis from genova is really in order. Your LLMD should know what this is. They will do a abx/anti fungal challenge if they find something and it will help you accordingly. These tests are not perfect, so if it's negative, it's not conclusive.

I recently had one done for severe stomach pain and was found to have 2 kinds negative bacteria.

Was put on Bactrim DS, and then kept on it because it is helping so much.

What brand probiotics are you taking? I can offer some suggestions of decent ones that won't kill the bank:

Udo's blend
PB8
Reuteri
Jarrow

More $$-

VSL#3
Custom
Theralac
Ultra Flora

Good luck, the stomach $hit sucks man.

Derek

I got systemic yeast a number of times while treating lyme. Seems to me my doc only gave me a week's worth of diflucan, or 5 days worth, maybe. No more than that.

It worked for me every time. BUT, you can just go and get yourself another case of systemic yeast right after the diflucan if you aren't careful about what you eat and drink.

If I cheated, I got yeast. Every time.

Ya...

I had no yeast issues at all (for 5 months)

Then one weekend I go out of town and slack on my diet. I eat potatoes, bar b q sauce, ice cream, etc.

Throw in some stress and no sleep for 2 days and I guess that's where I got this yeast infection from.

My LLMD said this was the first time my EOS has been high at all. And it's really high.

So somethings going on : )
He told me to stop artemisinin too

TF-

Glad 5 days worked for you, but that is rare.

5 days is the standard MD amount RXd and is usually insufficient for most cases of systemic fungal infections.

Sounds like you were a soldier on your diet though, and that's a huge part of it, as much as we all wish it wasn't. [Wink]

Great advice guys.

Ya, djf... I stopped the garlic (instinctively I guess)

My Probiotics are
Ultra Flora and OrthoBiotics

I take a total of 90 billion CFU's/day

Ultra Flora(50 billion CFU's) I pop open the capsule and pour into my mouth at night.

I'm definitely a diet-nut as well. I've had to be (hypoglycemia, adrenal fatigue)

As far as carbs go... on top of veggies I might eat quinoa and Rice and Shine Cereal.

These won't mess with yeast. Very low glycemic/digest slowly.

The reason simple carbs are bad for yeast is they break down into glucose very fast.

What is difference between systemic yeast and just yeast.

One has spread throughout body and one is just in gut?

I've had high eosinophils for a long time. It can be caused by allergies or parasites. Seemed to start during babs treatment for me. Mine has been as high as 2 1/2 X's normal, looks like yours is much higher than that even. Do you have allergies?

We treat parasites with albenza and it goes back to normal but if I don't continue to treat it goes right back up.

Systemic yeast can cause horrendous symptoms that overlap with lyme symptoms. It can be very difficult to get rid of for some people.

cane asked:
Can yeast cause excessive hunger and weight gain around waist/stomach?

Yes. So can low blood sugars. Blood sugar difficulties can be caused by systemic yeast but also by lyme. I don't know when or how fast you gained the weight but fluid gain can be part of the picture with yeast infection probably with lyme too.

Edited to add:
Come to think of it, my allergies have gotten so much better with treatment. I thought they were related to lyme but now I wonder if the connection may be to parasites? You would think worms could damage the gut which in turn could cause allergies.

Cane - I've read that if you have visible candida, it has already gone systemic. Don't know how true that is.

Canefan - did you say you were on Biaxin? I took that stuff and got yeast instantly and I was really concerned about c-diff because the stuff was really strong for me.

If you were on Biaxin - how long were you on it? I would say that is the culprit.

I was on zithro, malarone, and art
I was taking the zithro on an empty stomach. probably a no-no (don't care what instructions say)

Terry,
Thanks for the info. It does sound like yeast in my case. I gained the 8 lbs within a week span!!
I don't have allergy issues.

I'll let yall know how this next 10-14 days go on diflucan + nystatin + flagyl + clean diet

For the record... when I take the nystatin tablets I become very nauseated and stomach gets upset (good sign!!)

I've stopped the garlic and turmeric for now. Don't want to overload the system.

Yes, esp the hunger.

You might want to check this out. I just started it about 10 days and I really like it!!! I think it really helps the intestinal "terrain."

Yes, many underestimate the power of a yeast infection gone bonkers!

Awesome. Thanks.

I'm also taking half dosage of humaworm in the mornings during my next 10 days lol

So.....

Diflucan
Nystatin
Flagyl
Humaworm (3000mg combo herbs)

I know my guts gonna take a beating... so before bed I'm pumpin probiotics(60 billion + CFU's)

I probably won't take any probiotics during the day... the meds + humaworm would destroy them anyhow...save the money)

yesterday was my 5th day on Diflucan

I herxed last night (frontal headache and nausea)

It was rough... drank some lemon water(definitely helped)

woke up today feeling really good. We'll see how this diflucan goes.

I'm encouraged by what I researched on it. Apparently a few LLMD's actually use it by itself in treating Lyme and have had great success.

At the very least I'll be putting a dent into Lyme while treating yeast.

I started humaworm and flagyl yesterday as well.

So I'm hitting Lyme/yeast from a few different angles. should be a fun month : )
Bloating is still present (but i expect it to be for awhile now, since I started humaworm)

I won't be able to see the bloating go down until finish my humaworm round.

In 1 week I'll be adding Humacleanse(colon cleanse) to the mix as well.

It's gentle and shouldn't interact with the meds.
Psyllium-based product.
