Hi All:

So...I had been on 400mg of Doxy and pulsing Flagyl 3 days every 2 weeks. This was working well for me. Last weekend I felt almost 100% for the first time in months. I still have symptoms, yes. But they are almost gone and considerably better.

I asked my LLMD about switching to different meds for the summer as I hate having to avoid the sun. I asked about Amoxy / Probenecid, but she prefers Biaxin / Amantadine because this will get all 3 forms of lyme. (Intracellular / Extracellular and Cyst).

So...I"m on day 4 of the new drugs and feel worse. It's not a disaster, mind you. I just don't feel as well as I did. And I"m going on vacation next week and want to feel as good as possible.

My biggest issues since starting the new drugs is increased dizziness / instability and "weird" vision with more floaters. These were originally my biggest problems before being diagnosed with Lyme.

I'm concerned I'm going backwards and fear a relapse. Is that is what is happening? Or is it a side effect of the new meds? Amantadine clearly mentions side effects of dizziness and blurry vision. And my doc did say that the first few days of Amantadine I may feel tired and a bit weird. Maybe it will go away if I stay on it another week or so?

I still have my doxy..so I could always go back on that. But then I have to avoid the sun like a vampire. Tough to do when you are on vacation.

Suggestions? Stick it out another week or so, or go back on Doxy?

I have had a similar experience switching from Doxy to Amox and Probenecid, seems I also did better on the Doxy but made the switch because of the sun issues.

I have never heard of the Amantadine so I look forward to everyone's response to this question also.

Too bad you are going on vacation so soon after starting a new med I hope the side effects get better for you because sometimes it seems to take a while for our bodies to adjust to a new medication.

I think I would try to stick it out and see what happens, hopefully it is not a driving vacation !!

Good luck

Thanks...Amantadine is actually an antiviral drug. But it is used in combination with Biaxin for Lyme as it supposedly raises the PH level inside the cell walls which Bb doesn't like. So they move out of the cells and get killed by the Biaxin.
