Hello.

I am about to start Cefprozil (500mg/2x day) for a lyme/bartonella flare up. I've read a bit about it and am nervous to take it.

I've read that it can cause all sorts of horrible things such as seizure disorder and colitis. I'm assuming these reactions are rare, but I'm nervous nonetheless.

I had been on Doryx for over a year. My LLMD wants to switch for the summer months so that I don't burn my skin.

Does anyone have experience with Cefprozil? Is it well tolerated? Dangerous? Effective against lyme/bart?

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Dear jwick25,
Please know that i'm just another Lyme patient, but i'd like to offer some ideas.

Colitis and seizures are symptoms of untreated chronic Lyme & Bartonella. It may be quite possible that patients in the drug company study reporting those side effects were actually in need of a personalized protocol from a LLMD.

Seems you are blessed with a LLMD concerned for your safety from the summer sun.

Can you hold off the new Cefprozil Rx 'til Monday morn so you can ease your mind with a quick double-check reply from your LLMD?

You can also call in to any pharmacy tonight and ask to speak with the pharmacist on duty. They are highly educated about drugs and ready to assist conscientiously. Ask about them about potential side effects since they're an appropriate professional source on this since your LLMD is likely less available on weekends.

Keep breathing, and seek a cool, relaxing spot this weekend.

Good liver support (milk thistle, etc.) is vital to fewer side effects.

Smile, Keebler & pugs...

Thank you, thank you, thank you...!

I took my first pill last night. So far, so good. I'm supposed to take it 2x a day, but am going to start with one pill a day for the first couple of days.

I figure I'll start slowly to make sure there is no allergic reaction. Although, I think that allergic reactions typically occur within minutes.

I appreciate the suggestions. I've never taken milk thistle, but have read many comments from those who do.

I did read that taking blood thinners while on cefprozil can cause problems. My LLMD wants me on bolouke, but doesn't this thin the blood?

I know it may not be the same as coumadin, but if it thins the blood, isn't that a risk?

LLMD wants me to take it to break up biofilm.

Ok...deep breaths...lol! Thank you so much! I've been really scared lately. [Smile]
