My 14 year old son recently had a deer tick bite. I took him to the pediatrician for prevented antibiotics and she said no because he did not had a rush or symptoms.
Having Lyme disease myself I tried to get an appointment with my current LLMD and the secretary said that because he does not have symptoms I cannot make an appointment.
Therefore I am self-medicating my son with doxycicline which I do not take anymore at this moment. I am giving him 1 pill of 100 mg twice a day.
Any advise on the dosage or length of treatment for this tick byte/lyme disease prevention?
He is 14 years old, 113 pounds, healthy.
I would appreciate your advise.
Thank you,

I had no symptoms after a known tick bite, and developed Lyme. I am surprised your current LLMD's office wouldn't prescribe prophylactic abx. Now's the chance to stop a prospective infection.

I understand doxy treatment is for anywhere btn 1-2 months, as long as there are no symptoms afterwards.

So, is this enough doxy?

In the UK for dosing of medicines in children, in general terms, children above 12 years of age are considered to be an adult. My 13 year old, 50kg (110lb)boy has been prescribed adult dosing for his lyme treatment so far.

I'd start him on 400mg/doxy until you can get him to the LLMD. CHeck the burrascano guidelines--200 is not effective.

Also, these herbs might be worth getting--this researcher is good.

Yes, 400 mg. per my ILADS LLMD.

(The vet gives my 50lb dog 300mg.)

Can you look for a new LLMD? What a thing to say, "can't see him because he has no symptoms"! What are they thinkin'?

So sorry for you, Norri. How can this happen that we have to self-treat for this disease? This is OUTRAGEOUS!! I cannot seem to get used to the injustice of it all.

Sorry, I'm venting and I'm really mad!! Prayers to your son.

Please keep an eye out for any other symptoms, as he could have contracted any number of known tick-borne infections.

Now would be the time to go back through the literature on things like RMSF (Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever) which is more common in the southern states than the NE.

Also, Erhlichia (sp?), Bartonella (tick-borne infection does not closely follow the common cat-scratch fever symptoms), Babesia, and several others.

I don't know what to tell you re: treating your son on your own, other than a person on Doxy etc. needs to avoid sunlight to not get the terrible Doxy burn. Also, plenty of high-quality probiotics is very important.

I wish you had an LLMD with a better attitude towards profilaxis. Heck, even many regular doctors treat preventatively, just not with long enough or large enough doses. Your LLMD's office staff response is very concerning.

I believe that the ILADS guidelines discuss dosing recommendations for adults and children, for preventive treatment.

The link to those guidelines is in my signature.

I took my 8yr to my llmd after 2 attached ticks, and he was treated prophylaticlly with 500mg ceftin for 3weeks. NO SYMPTOMS! only 2 more days left of treatment!!

I did send 1 tick off to igenex for testing and it Tested NEG for Lyme and Ehrlichiosis-so all ticks are not always carriers for disease, however I didn't have the other tick available to send for testing. But feel better to be treating prophylaticlly.

very surprised that llmd would not treat? I'd expect that from the pediatrican....like mine did!
