Why does it take the brain so long to heal? Anxiety, ocd, flashes of ok, then the negative thoughts start, sleep is screwed, heart racing all day, more negative thoughts, jumping out of skin...Is is the last thing to heal. My physical stuff is now better, bloods show it, wbc, minimal joint pain, but all I wanted back was my clear rational thinking, and that what seems gone the most. Cant do psych meds physically, so herbalilst doing everything she can do to calm it down. Tue felt like brain almost closed, back to routine, passed, then anxiety started real bad again. 2 mos late for menstrual cycle, just got it today, that doesn't help. WHERE IS THE JUSTICE IN THIS? [bonk]

I think it's a great idea, personally. I have heard wonderful things about Buhner's cognitive recovery program. Good luck whatever path you take.

Have you treated parasites or bartonella? I treated both together, so I'm not sure which did it, but my brain recovered with that treatment.

lyme in putnam,

I have just had the absolutely most intense , through the roof ,

period of anxiety...never experienced anything like it before...I

started taking valerian root tincture...it helped...took the edge off

at least and allowed me to function through it...valerian is the

herbal source for valium...maybe it would help you too ...

Dear friend
So sorry to hear what you are going through, and please know that you are far from alone! So many of us with lyme suffer the exact same thing.

Please be aware that a doctor informed me that the nervous system is the slowest in the body to heal, slower than bones.

I too am an herbalist and do not want in any way to conflict with your current one. Let me offer the following generic pointers which you might ask your herbalist about. I conquered may runaway thoughts/anxieties by the following means, myself:

A) Clear up leaky gut syndrome and anything that causes it. When/if foods that are not supposed to get into the bloodstream via compromised gut lining integrity, do get into the blood where they do not belong, the least they can do is to cause nerve inflammation if not outright auto-immune attack. Often, of the nervous system. Sealing up the gut lining is key. This means addressing any food allergies (gluten/casein first and foremost), checking into medication side effects, be aware that NSAIDs can cause leaky gut, so can Candida infections and other things.

B) Surely your herbalist will be using nerve tonics with you. I myself also found rubbing my body topically with coconut oil to be very helpful in calming down runaway thoughts. Especially rub it alongside the spine (Directly adjoining it, on both sides). Ask your herbalist what s/he thinks about this, about topically applied St Johnswort oil (be sure it is not conflicting with mainstream drugs, but the topical should not be nearly as much of a problem), and perhaps trying some homeopathics such as avena sativa. Wild oats as herb can be nerve-calming too. Skullcap, etc. this would be less intense and more "Tonifying" than valerian.

C) Have you been tested for heavy metals? Do you have mercury-containing "silver" fillings in your teeth? Read here: www.drhuggins.com he is a lousy writer and a superb researcher!Don' t be put off by his writing, he is very for real and has logged the recovery rates of 65,000 patients world-wide after having their amalgams removed and after detox therapy, plus done clinical testing on animals and consenting adults for 35 years. He is no slouch and is a dentist, toxicologist and immunologist.

D)Don't under-estimate the power of food allergies, you would be very surprised.

E) DO you have chemical sensitivities? Has this been addressed?

F) Not to mention that lyme itself can cause all the symptoms you are mentioning.

G) Have you considered chiropractic neurology? This specialty is excellent, if you have the right practitioner (as is true with anything).

Keep at it my friend. It should get better if you are tackling it along the right strategic path. If not, try a different way. REmember once again that nerves take a long time to heal, but given the right method and time, time, time you should get better. Blessings to you!

I sure hope you find relief. I could never tolerate psych drugs. Made me much worse.

It is a good idea to eliminate foods that you may be sensitive to. I am going to try it myself. So hard though.

I am currently using niacinamide to help heal nerve function. It seems to be helping - slowly but I do see improvement.

When I started if I closed my eyes and lifted one foot to the other knee I feel over immediately. Now I can hold it a few seconds.
This means the nerves are sending signals to my brain a little better. Niacinamide helps with dementia and some mental illnesses.

Check this out, ask your herbalist what s/he thinks. Remember that to mix too many things may cause interference, so I would not advise you to do this on your own without consulting first.

Planetary Herbals Bupleurum Liver Cleanse is formulated to bring blood flow to the liver and thereby nourish the organ: http://www.planetaryherbals.com/products/GP1509/

The herb bupleurum is used to calm down "liver wind" which is a Traditional Chinese Medicine term for symptomatic bursts that come and go, both on the emotional/mental and physiological levels. To smooth out the liver qi can be part of the key in calming down restless thoughts, in some people.

There are many different causes and to target the right one, FOR YOU, is key. Keep persisting and trying new ways if the old way hasn't worked.

If this is lyme-related (sounds likely) then detox herbs will be part of the key.

Planetary Herbals also makes a formula for myelin sheath health, go to their website and check it out and ask your herbalist about it.

Bear in mind that in Traditional Chinese Medicine the liver is the seat of emotions/thought and to work with that organ can be key.

For me, none of the symptoms you described settled down until I got off gluten. BAM! ONE WEEK, GONE!!!! That's because I am gluten intolerant and to stress, not everybody is. If yes however, then this could be key. Blood tests are highly inaccurate, a naturopathic doctor I used to work with echoes me there too. I am extremely allergic to gluten, yet tested "not allergic" ha, what a farce! To eliminate suspected food allergens is the way to go, stressed the naturopathic doc, then to reintroduce the suspected foods to test for relapse, is in her opinion the most accurate test. In my own experience, I ditto.

Gluten-free living can be joyous if you are creative as a chef/baker and also there are many good products in the healthfood stores nowadays. Tinkyada pasta is very good FYI others are mealy but this one tastes good and has good texture.

Best wishes with this.

Hello friends
this will be my last post since I don't intend to dominate here. Sorry about that. I did want to share this tip however because i have found it to be very effective, at least for me:

Mix orange blossom water (available at Middle Eastern specialty food stores) with chamomile tea. Enjoy the luscious fragrance and taste! Orange blossom water is known for calming anxiety and even in some cases, hysteria.

You could use the Neroli essential oil available at healthfood stores, only two or one drops per cup of tea, it's very strong. Not as good tasting as the product above but it could work. Not for children or infants.

It's possible that serotonin boosting may be key and if so either St Johnswort tincture (conflicts with most mainstream medications, headsup), tryptophan, l-theanine may be helpful. If those don't work, medication may be needed. Again check with your herbalist. DO NOT mix any of the above with mainstream antidepressant medications, this could cause "Serotonin syndrome" which can be serious.

Weak adrenal glands can cause anxiety, read more on Christopher Hobbs's herbal webpage: www.christopherhobbs.com see the online herbal prescriber
