My LLMD has put me on 1200mg of magnesium a day to help my severe constitpation (7 years, mostly on, Abx, thanks a lot). I have been on this regimine for about 3 months now, but I am also now starting on activated charcoal to help with detox (still very toxic) which can constipate, even with Mag.

Question, is this dangerous? I have to me careful about timing due to Thyroid and some other meds, but the upper limits on recmd amounts is a lot lower than what I'm taking every day.

Nope... You will get diarrhea if you get too much. That would make you back off the dosage.

As Lymetoo says....bowel tolerance..you'll get diarrhea. That said, the more you can take, the better!! Most of us are sorely deficient and it's hard to get enough without the stool issue.

I am in the process of learning about getting it transdernaly. Makes a lot of sense to me...bypass the gut entirely.

Yes, applying mag oil is great.. or doing epsom salt soaks, etc.

I have to be very careful with the oil as it has burned my skin.

As long as your kidneys are in good shape, 1,200 a day should be fine - divided at least 3 x, though for 400 mg or so.

For many, up to 2,000 mg a day may be required. But ALWAYS IN DIVIDED DOSE, 3 - 4 x a day. Never all at once because that can be too much and cause kidney distress.

We can't absorb it all at once, anyway so it has to be in divided doses, anyway.

Still, as you reach your tolerance, your bowels will tell you what you can handle and then back down. Some types are more colon stimulating that others, though.

Even at the top range of oral supplementation (I would not go over 2,000 a day) you may need to go to shots or IV. Hopefully, not.

Topical or in a bath with epsom salts can help, as others say, but do not use too much of the epsom salts as that can cause skin irritation if too concentrated.

A foot soak can also bring in some without the bath just, again, be mindful of if your skin starts to itch or burn, that means it is too concentrated.

OTHER minerals need to be in balance with magnesium. Calcium, boron, etc. And we have to have enough D3 to help absorb our minerals.

Thanks guys. I can't really dose out the Magnesium too much because of meds I take, and it is the ONLY way my bowels get cleaned out, even if it is diarrhea.

I'm still too toxic, so I'm not getting better as quickly as I should be. LLMD has put me on activated charcoal and Cryptolpis (yuck!) as a low cost (and low herx) attempt to help this process.

We shall see. [Razz]

" . . . can't really dose out the Magnesium too much. . . " (end quote)

I don't know exactly what you meant by that but do not take a full day's dose of magnesium all at once, it can damage the kidneys - and the full day's dose can't be absorbed all at once anyway, so it's a waste. It must be divided to keep kidneys safe.

How much time is appropriate between 400mg gel caps if I may need to take up to 4 of them?
