Berberine binds to RamR and upregulates ramA and acrAB
RamR is a transcriptional *repressor* of the gene-encoding RamA protein, which controls the expression of the multidrug efflux system genes acrAB-tolC.
Gram-negative bacteria employ efflux pumps to expel unwanted materials from their cytoplasm.
Cells rely on this process for survival.
The pump is transient and consists of three proteins when it is complexed.
Two inner-membrane proteins make up the translocase complex, which recognizes specific substrates and provides energy for the expulsion step.
When the translocase complex is bound to its export substrate,
it recruits a third, outer membrane protein known as TolC.
The complex is capable of expelling intruders in a single energy-dependent step across both the outer and inner membranes and across the periplasmic space between them.
This is possible because TolC stretches between the two membranes, creating a direct path from the cytoplasm to the extracellular space

2.What doses are needed?
3. What timing is needed?
4. What drugs/other supplements should NOT be taken in conjunction with berberine?
5.What drugs/other supplements have a synergy with berberine?
6. Which persons should NOT take berberine (diabetics on insulin come to mind)?

- Marnie,
Thanks so much for this. That last link has some splendid detail on drug resistance and the efflux pump uniqueness of gram-negative bacteria (of which Bb is one).
I could read only a little bit but will come back to this "treasure trove" of information, probably many times before it's all read. Glad you are such a good scout of detail. -
