Does anyone have experience with a hiatal hernia, especially as a cause of breathing issues?,

I have been having breathing problems off/on for the past two years - shortness of breath, tight chest, wheezing.

I know babesia is the obvious culprit, but I've had heavy treatment and the air hunger from that faded long ago.

This round of breathing issues all started with getting c. pnemonaie which I have been plagued with off/on since.

Asthma has now been ruled out. Allergist now thinks it's Vocal Cord Dysfunction. But the voice therapist he sent me to disagrees, and the symptoms don't quite fit.

He asked offhand if I have a hiatal hernia. Umm, not that I know of. Googling it, I have a lot of the symptoms. Apparently it can press on the vagus nerve and also cause heart palpitations which I also have (and heart has been checked and is fine). I even found a website that claims that all chronically ill people have a hiatal hernia (not saying that's true but it's interesting).

If anyone has experience with this, please do share. thanks!

I had one a long time ago but they tend to go away on their own. If it hasn't, a barium swallow will reveal it.

I have a hiatal hernia. It can contribute to acid reflux or GERD. Some of my siblings have this and my dad did, so I think there might be a hereditary component to them.

I had a very bad case of GERD years ago and I used to go to a chiropractor who would do an adjustment, which helped to fix the hiatal hernia. It would really help!

Hmm, I don't get searing pain, maybe I don't have one. I do have pain when pressure is applied right below the sternum. LLMD has always chalked it up to "bloating."

no one can figure out whey I have shortness of breath, tight chest, wheezy etc.

any ideas welcome on what it could be!
thanks!

I know someone in our MCAS group was just diagnosed with the vocal cord thing. I think part of her symptoms was pain near the spleen. Really strange!

I get tightness in my throat and chest from salicylates and in general from MCAS.

A friend of mine has a hiatal hernia. Her chiropractor will "pull it back down" for her.

We found shortness of breath to be linked to inflammation that triggered "fight or flight" and "fight or flight" triggered inflammation.(around and around we go)

Mindful breathing helped. Big inhale for 4 seconds, hold 7 seconds(oxygenates), exhale 8 seconds (calms heart, helps vagus calm things down).

Cutting out all gluten, sugar, dairy helped decrease inflammation. (huge help for wheezing)

Curcumin helped.

Rescue Remedy helped the anxiety too.

Homeopathic Ignatia 30c helped with muscle constriction when fear was involved (kind of feeling hysterical/frightened feeling)

I'm sorry you are suffering. [Frown]

That is interesting because my allergist just told me to try mindfulness! The fight or flight cycle makes sense.

Thanks so much to everyone who weighed in.
